Windows 10!

Glutton for punishment...

Thank God I moved to Apple Mac OS a couple years ago... I was a MS Computer Tech for a large corp for 35 years and DO NOT miss windows at all, it is a bloated helpless OS! :-)

I've been fighting MS since the beginning and I've never had the guts to quit them. There are some legitimate reasons, but that's the main thing. No guts.

I just "upgraded" to Win 7 Pro from XP. Out of all of them I still prefer XP, never a problem.

I eliminated the annoying Win 10 update Icon from my task Bar! Blocked it from ever returning.:)

I did exactly the same recently. The only reason I ditched XP was to
go to a 64 bit OS. For my main app, Win 7 64 is the best OS.
But then I found that the only Win 7 I could get was OEM builder copies,
which are only good for one machine, and can't be transferred to another.
Being as the puter I was using was getting a tad aged, I decided to
rebuild also, so I wouldn't have to buy Win 7 twice.
So I'm running a new puter "i7 4790" and Win 7 pro 64 now.
I too deleted the Win 10 update, and haven't installed any of the Win 10
preinstall updates. I keep getting a few and "hide" them all.

It's just a shame that a new OS from Microsoft is met with such trepidation. Unfortunately, those geniuses in Redmond have earned consumer fear over the years.

I'm sure not crazy about the ever increasing amount of data that
the newer OS's send off to the mothership. Also not crazy about
forced updates.
But saying that, my main app I run which is a flight sim, has always
dictated my OS. And hardware too for that matter. I have to run fairly
stout machines..
And with the present sims, Win 7 64 is the best OS as far as stability,
and the least amount of issues.
So that's what I'll be running until I change to a sim that requires a
different OS. The only possible reason I could see to go to Win 10
would be to run DX 12 video, but I don't have anything that runs DX 12,
and my video is only good to DX 11.

I upgraded to system 10 almost 10 years ago! No problems! Oh, wait, that's on a Mac, and I suppose you mean on a Dell or something.

I have been in IT for longer than I care to say. I have a degree in that stuff, ugh!, and I was a Sr. UNIX/Linux Sys Admin at place where we looked after 3500+ employees and over 6500+ nodes on our network. microCRap and Windoze were always our biggest problem, first, last, and always.

I would recommend the following FREE Operating Systems, with no viruses, ever!

1. Linux: Main Page - Linux Mint
2. Linux: Ubuntu PC operating system | Ubuntu

or

3. Purchase at high-expense, a Mac, great computers, their Operating System is based on BSD UNIX, a wonderful choice, and you get free classes on how to use them at the Mac Stores, but youtube will get you the same with Linux.

MicroTURD sucks and will always suck. Their "high-end" "server" platforms store passwords in memory! Geez! mIcrotUrd and the windoZe operating system are the worst things to happen to technology in the history of technology.

The UNIX/Linux motto:

LIVE FREE or DIE!

That's all great, but if the main app you run requires Windows...
No real choice. The specific airplane I usually fly is not available
for the Linux platform.
And the only decent simulator that is sold for Linux is X plane.
But the plane I fly, they don't sell for X plane so far. Only FSX
or Lockheed Martin's P3D.
That company is starting to produce airplanes for X plane though.
But the first is the DC-6. I fly their 737 most of the time.. :/

In general, "applications" are sold for Linux, they are open source and free. There are ways to natively run windoze apps under linux, it takes some work to get them up and running. If you are a gamer, and that is one of your primary uses for a PC, you are, sadly pretty much stuck under some version of windoze.

I will give credit where it is due and state that windows 7 is the best workstation version of their OS that I have used. I think the proof there is in the pudding that when the windoze 8 computers were out, microsloft was offering downgrades of brand new computers to windows 7. I laughed at that quite a bit, that is until a friend of mine asked me to help him with his downgrade, yuck!

I don't game all that much these days, though I used to 5 or so years ago; I use a PS3 for that, but even that has its issues.

We all gotta figure out what we are willing to live with.

What do you expect from a company that has never put out an instruction book on it's product? I think I remember seeing such an animal in DOS days with IBM pcs but never with Windows. If you have a problem they tell you to ask other users that may have had the same problem you do and figured out a solution.

Ummm... I think I have a manual for 3.1 around here somewhere... :D

Appreciate the help but been there, tried that. It doesn't boot to any screen at all. It's almost like the video portion of the motherboard is wiped out. Nothing at all on the screen when you power up.

I had the same thing happen on my other PC the blue screen of death  It may heave been black cannt remember lol But the pc would fire up but no action on the monitor! I will get it looked at one day to have a second pc working :) but could be the video card or the mother board! FYI I also had a similar problem on this PC. I change the VGA cable with a spare and all was good, in that case just a bad cable. Do yo have a spare/left over VGA cable to try?

So far I am OK with Win 10. Getting used to some new things and only issue I had was with the drivers on my printer,, Updated those and all is fine running smooth and a tad faster..

Not that I was ever considering "upgrading" to 10 to begin with, but this just cements my desire to be a Windows 7 holdout long after its EOS date.

Also, I said it before and I'll say it again: This ridiculous fad of trying to turn desktop computers into glorified smartphones/tablets needs to go the way of John Barleycorn.

If I wasn't a gamer, I'd have just switched to Linux years ago...

(Sorry Linux fans, but I'm not messing with WINE or performing voodoo to get all of my hardware to work properly.)

It's a laptop. I was running a vga cable to the big monitor; removed it and booted to the laptop screen just to verify. No joy.

Yeah, a couple of people here have said they successfully installed it on their laptops. Personally I think they got lucky - or like I said earlier they got the specific upgrade for their system from the manufacturer. I'd bet very few if any will have success with just a generic upgrade. The odds against it are high enough that I wouldn't even consider giving it a try on any laptop computer I cared about using again in the foreseeable future.

It's running fine on my Toshiba P-55. It's 3 years old and not exactly a high end laptop. How is a laptop different than a PC? Win 10 looked at my hardware before it was installed online. Isn't that SOP?

I have been designing software and programming computers for 49 years. One thing that I learned is to let others test/experience new software. I will wait at least 6 months before I even think about Windows 10.

Yeah, you're actually better off with a little older hardware as long as it meets the minimum system requirements. Being a little older improves the odds that all the drivers for your video card, network card, hard drive controller, usb controller, etc. have already been provided to Microsoft by the manufacturers and will be bundled into the upgrade.

Its the stuff that is either new enough or from lesser known manufacturers that is more likely to NOT be included in the upgrade package. And that's when your nightmares start coming to life.

Mine is (okay, was) a 4 year old HP. Certainly old enough to meet the criteria you outlined, and certainly not some "off brand" unit with weird drivers.

The laptop I have en route to replace it is another HP, with Win 7 Professional. I will not be "upgrading" this one to Win10.

I learned, after may years or being a technician ... I will NEVER upgrade to the newest operating system until it has been out there and working fine for 6 months to 1 year. Also, I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Why is Microsoft giving this OS away for free? One of the truths is that since Google has become the number 1 ranking exploitation master, seller and re-seller of personal surfing data (and much much more), Microsoft wants a bigger piece of that pie. In preparation for the Windows 10 upgrades, the past few months some of the updates were to add telemetry tracking logs as SCM logs to the earlier Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 operating systems. I'm holding tight with Windows 7 Professional. If it really starts to annoy me I think I will finally try a Linux system. Apple is just as bad tracking your surfing habits and using and / or selling leads to advertisers to customize the items that show up in the sidelines, offering you to purchase.

Anyone who uses any type of cloud or icloud to save personal data, business contacts and personal data should talk with a few security gurus who have no horse in the surf tracking, sales, advertising and data personal collection race, but only interest is your security and protection.
