Tried to buy a gun at Academy-will NEVER make that mistake again

A friendly waive and smile from both of us and I realized that I really like living in the boonies. :)

I like living in the south. Everyone is my friend . . . until I have reason to unfriend them. When I'm walking the 'hood, I smile and wave at everyone who drives by. Those who don't wave back don't know it, but I mutter "Yankee" as they pass.

My ex-wife says I am an ***. I vote and reward with my dollars. If a eatery store etc "screws up", I don't go back. I will go to a "mom and pop shop" most every time, before I go to a Chain for anything. I buy LOCAL for everything I can. Yeah I probably pay to much, but I ALWAYS get excellent service, and they remember me the next time....usually. Last gun purchase was on Black Fri about 6 pm...took me longer to transfer the money on the smart phone than it did for them to do the deal.

WHERE DO YOU GET OFF?

Thinking that the customer, the one plunking down the Benjamin's is right? Don't you know that the Lords of the gun counter SHALL NOT BE TRIFFLED WITH no matter how rude or incompetent they may be.:rolleyes: I've stormed out of more than a few places & not just gun stores, Normally I will wave bye bye with the cash & tell them "your competition (http://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif& name them) will be getting this".

My youngest Brother and I are blessed with a Middle brother that named both his sons after his siblings. Both of his young men have gone astray with the law on several occasions. For awhile before computers required a DOB, Every time someone did a background check or runs a license number bells and whistles go off until they check the Middle Name and date of birth. the 45 year difference sure makes a difference..

Sorry to hear of your experience. We, as gun owners, buyers and sellers have enough hassles without that kind of garbage.
All you can do is speak with your feet and wallet, which is exactly what you did.

After reading CCantu357's thread about buying a closeout Ruger Scout rifle,I called the Lafayette Academy this morning to see if they had some, AND THEY DID!!!:) Kid on the phone even told me it was the stainless model for $599.00.
Well, I get there and of course it is the blued model with the laminate stock but at that price I didn't quibble. Kid hands it to me, takes the trigger lock off, I inspect it and tell him to get the paperwork started. Now I can fill out the 4473 in my sleep and one of the things is that I have no middle name just an initial. Well I fill out the form like I always do and when I get to the middle name block I do what I always do " F (initial only)". Kid asks me about it and I tell him NO MIDDLE NAME JUST AN INITIAL. Well-he hands me off to another who does the input and HE gets stumped by the initial only(in the mean time he has stopped 6 times-I counted-to do other things as he is inputting the data). I'm starting to get a little steamed. I get approved and then it's time to get the box-again he stops twice to do something else. Get the box and I say put it up on the counter so I can make sure everything is in there. He doesn't and proceeds to try to put the gun in the box without removing the bolt. I tell him he has to remove the bolt to get in in properly and he can't do it!!.He is straining to get the bolt out and I finally say "Here give it to me". I remove the bolt and give it back to him. He packs it all in the box and I ask again to put the box up on the counter so I can inspect and make sure everything that is supposed to be there is there. I take the bolt that he placed loose in the box and put it where it is supposed to be, check everything out and close up the box. By now I want my DL back and I want to pay for my gun and leave. By now I'm really getting pissed.
So now they call over the big manager to go over the paperwork for a third time and he gets hung up on the no middle initial thing and I point blank tell him I ain't splaining again especially in light of the fact that a piece of paper from ATF is on the counter next to the 4473 with my name on it and the word "Proceed" below my name. He goes through everything AGAIN and picks up the box and I said pay here or at the front? Now bear in mind that all this time I have laid out 7 crisp 100 dollar bills on the counter to pay for this thing. I pick up the money and he asks me if I'm finished shopping and I tell him I've been finished shopping for 30 minutes-I'm just waiting for them to do their job and sell me the gun. Well he looks at me and asks if there is a problem, that the law requires a background check and I go off. I tell him I know what the law requires and what you have been doing for the past 30 minutes ain't it. I told him I should have been out of there 20 minutes ago (insta check took the usual 2 minutes for me as it usually does). I started walking to the front and told him, "Get my gun and lets go". Well he then says "I'm tempted to decline you." That's when I told him to stick the gun and left.
I think what really set me off was that middle kid turning away from me 8 times without even the courtesy of asking or excusing himself. So as it went, I walked into the store pointed to what I wanted filled out the 4473, laid out the money and sat back and watched them loose a sale.
So anyone in Lafayette Louisiana there is a nice Scout rifle at the Louisiana Ave, Academy for sale if you can put up with that kind of nonsense.
Jeeze I am pissed!!!!

Take it one step further....had a friend whose name was
"J" "M" Williams. Never ending, "what is your first name"?
what is your "middle name"? would drive him crazy.
"J" "M" Williams...again what is your first name?
I know "J" but what does the "J" stand for? dah "J"

what a night mare! I have bought many guns and fishing reels etc at my Academy. Those guys are really sharp and I rate them excellent in product knowledge and having that "customer concept".

I doubt very seriously that Academy intentionally puts that kind of people on the floor for their customers to deal with. I'm thinkin' a well place email, letter or even a phone call to the right person in the chain of command could result in your store getting a much better class of sales people.

Good luck.

Same here. I've never bought ( but been tempted too many times) to buy a gun at Academy here. I've witnessed many sales and no probs, the guys here are good. The only thing that gets me pissed off about the Academy here, is the long waits on the phone about 50% of the time, when I'm calling to see what type of .22 is available that day. Other than that, they give 1st class service here and are nothing like dicks is.

I'll never buy local again unless it's from Maw and Paw. Big Box just simply can't do it right. I bought a Ruger SR40 from Cabela's last year and they had two registers of four open manned by apes. It took me two hours after the BG check to get out of the place. I like to buy online and pay my FFL $15...he's one mile from my house.

I had an almost identical experience trying to buy ammunition at Dick's. The salesman was literally looking at me at the fishing gear counter while he and a customer played with a reel. He neither made any effort to recognize my existence, nor to get me some assistance. I actually had to grab another employee TWICE to get some service.

I've only bought three items from dicks here. Over a year ago, two boxes of Remington 9 mm ( only because of their opening discount everyone got when they first opened) and the last time, was just to buy a cold soft drink. I think I spent a grand total of $12.00 bucks.... Haven't been in in well over a year.

I planned to go to Academy tomorrow but now I'm having second thoughts.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Academy here is 1st class. The only thing I don't like, is they will not order specific guns I want, which is the only reason why I've not bought one from them. I want a Mares Leg, and a Henry in either. 45 or .357, but they never get them in.

HA HA HA HA, I'll have to remember to say that instead to showing the middle finger.:D Actually, I don't flip the bird, but sometimes feel like its necessary.:D

Fortunately, I have little reason to go in Dick's.

I'm not interested in non-shooting sports, am not a hunter, and they don't sell handguns in Ohio. Hence, my visits are few and far between.

Me either. Their gun guys......ain't, their customer service....ain't, they don't sell handguns, just bolt-action rifles and shotguns, and their prices are the highest in town.

There are things I buy from Academy - clothes and golf balls come to mind. But I'd never buy a gun there. The trigger lock, as Texas Star noted, is a deal killer. I'm not buying a gun without checking it's function first.

I've seen them take the lock off here when asked. I've asked when looking at something and never been denied.

Academy is a lot like Dick's. Both focus more on selling running shoes and soccer balls than they do guns. They don't even offer layaway. I once looked at a Ruger American at an Academy store that had the scope mounted. Was almost ready to pay for it at the counter when the employee starts telling me that the scope was put on there by accident and that I'd have to pay extra for it. I did the same thing and walked out.

I'd just rather pay a little more and get it from Bud's or Kentucky Gun.

Caj, maybe NICS told Academy to detain. They dragged it out waiting for DHS/FBI/Sheriff to show up. You got out just in time!

Even if Caj had been arrested, he would almost immediately be released because all real criminals have three names, often three first names.

I've only bought one gun from Academy but the salesman took the lock off for me.

Really though, how many threads have talked about gun store boobs getting their hands on a gun, flipping open the cylinder, slamming it shut or repeatedly letting an auto slide slam shut
while pointing it in everyone's direction. And not just testing
the trigger a time or two but dozens of times.

Gun store boobs ruin a lot for everyone and a big box store just
might attract more than its share.

The locks also lend a bit of security when they are busy and multiple guns are out being shown to people.
