Imported foods

Smithfield foods has announced the fact they will be & are importing meat from China.... due to the change in US law this last year.. they do not have to tell you the meat originated from countries other than the USA...Golly I can't see why the mayor of that town where Smithfield has a plant doesn't want to talk about this... can you?

Here in Norway all imported food has to be labeled with country and producer , i personally stay away from meat from some countries like Ireland and England, i eat very little canned or frozen vegetables, i like fresh and clean food, i Fish my own salmon and Trout and plan to start hunting deer and moose again , there is nothing like a fresh smoked salmon With scrambeled eggs and a Cold beer ;)

Almost everyone who has the chance to travel to Scandinavia initially remarks upon the "blandness" of the food - but soon you realize what is missing is the cloying sweetness of most foods in the US. Once that sugar addiction begins to wear off, you get a brand new appreciation for fresh and natural flavors - it is truly hard to eat like that here, due to the diabolical methods used to hide sugar (in all its forms)throughout our foods. I am glad to live in the country and have so much more control over my food (and water!).

Ireland and England. Why ?

As long as we are on a health kick, don't forget about the modern US home in which we create a toxic gas chamber of carcinogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). While healthy alternatives exist for a small premium, most builders and re-modelers specify Particle Board, Plywood, Insulation, Carpet, and Paint that off-gasses VOC's for decades. In a home with less fresh air intake thanks to tight windows and doors, a Heat/Energy Recovery Ventilator works wonders.

With the latest spate of cancer afflicting our membership, we could do ourselves a favor and keep VOC's in mind when the opportunity arises to choose building products.

Ahh, Norway. :)

At the Åndalsnes Hostel, a local fisherman carried fresh fish through the lobby 20 minutes before breakfast started. Then an enormous sizzling skillet of breakfast fish came out of the kitchen a short time later. The tart Norwegian yogurt was heaven. For dinner, a young woman walked into the forest and picked a bag of huge mushrooms that were cooked and served in a cream sauce with dinner with the best tasting carrots I've ever had. Friendly people and the most stunning landscape I've ever seen. Did the loop up to Nordcap, and back through Finland and Sweden. Got to go back there.

. . . and life expectancy keeps going up.

I can't catch my own salmon but I do cure my own!

Sounds like a balanced diet to me.

Yes, but cancer rates are skyrocketing and life expectancy is only being maintained by leaps in medical science, raising mortality rates.

Most people are eager to make lifestyle changes to survive, once they are diagnosed with cancer. There might be some easy changes that could be made beforehand, to help avoid it.

Junk science.

Many solvents are carcinogenic. Many household products contain them, and their off-gassing is called VOC's. If you value your health, they should be avoided.

Being argumentative is entertaining for some, but I bet even you open a window when working with solvents.

Since your a fan of the CDC, this is an excerpt from them:

Volatile Organic Compounds
In the modern home, many organic chemicals are used as ingredients in household products. Organic chemicals that vaporize and become gases at normal room temperature are collectively known as VOCs.

Examples of common items that can release VOCs include paints, varnishes, and wax, as well as in many cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products. Levels of approximately a dozen common VOCs can be two to five times higher inside the home, as opposed to outside, whether in highly industrialized areas or rural areas. VOCs that frequently pollute indoor air include toluene, styrene, xylenes, and trichloroethylene. Some of these chemicals may be emitted from aerosol products, dry-cleaned clothing, paints, varnishes, glues, art supplies, cleaners, spot removers, floor waxes, polishes, and air fresheners. The health effects of these chemicals are varied. Trichlorethylene has been linked to childhood leukemia. Exposure to toluene can put pregnant women at risk for having babies with neurologic problems, retarded growth, and developmental problems. Xylenes have been linked to birth defects. Styrene is a suspected endocrine disruptor, a chemical that can block or mimic hormones in humans or animals. EPA data reveal that methylene chloride, a common component of some paint strippers, adhesive removers, and specialized aerosol spray paints, causes cancer in animals [38]. Methylene chloride is also converted to CO in the body and can cause symptoms associated with CO exposure. Benzene, a known human carcinogen, is contained in tobacco smoke, stored fuels, and paint supplies. Perchloroethylene, a product uncommonly found in homes, but common to dry cleaners, can be a pollution source by off-gassing from newly cleaned clothing. Environmental Media Services [39] also notes that xylene, ketones, and aldehydes are used in aerosol products and air fresheners.

Scary! Scary! And completely off topic.
Topic is the health safety of consumer products imported from China, ala food.

I thought the effect of consumer products on the air we breathe in the home was in a similar vein as the food we eat. The recent headlines of hazardous China-made Lumber Liquidators flooring and toxic Chinese drywall is only a sampling of unregulated household toxins we introduce to our homes.

Life expectancy isn't just about food. It's everything. Safer working conditions, sanitation, science and cures, dare I say.....regulations. Everything together makes life longer. Life is easier today than it was 100 years ago.
