May 13, 1945

...No church services were held for the chaplain did not come out from the beach. Strolled about the deck this morning and with little wind it was delightful. The walks give me an opportunity to talk with the men and learn what they are thinking. Between 1850 and 2030 some 35 aircraft attacked the ships off the coast. Picket destroyer Bache (DD 470) was hit by a suicider killing 41 and wounding 42. The crew extinguished the fire in short order and the ship was towed to Kerama. Some 25 aircraft dropped bombs on Okinawa but failed to damage installations. Eighteen enemy were downed by CAP and the pickets. Bogeys were active during the night and several closed to five miles, where they were brought under fire.

On 13 May, several enemy dive-bombers attacked the picket station and one completed a successful kamikaze attack on Bache. The wing of the plane struck near number two stack, catapulting the plane down on the main deck amidships, with its bomb exploding about seven feet above the main deck. Forty-one of the crew were killed (16 missing in action) and 32 were injured. All steam and electrical power were lost. Fires were brought under control within 20 minutes and she was towed to Kerama Retto, Okinawa, for temporary repairs.

From U.S.S. Bache, DD 470 - in memory of Leo B. Helmboldt, 1919-1994

"This picture was taken May 14th, 1945, the day after the hit, taken from either the USS Nestor or the USS Haggard, DD-555 - both were alongside - in Wise Man's Cove(?), Kerama Retto, Okinawa."

Good day Friday even if it was the thirteeth.
Wifey and I hit a garage sale locally that had
advertised in the local paper. Ad said they had
some .22 rifles and some shotguns for sale.
I walked away with a like new Remington pump
action rifle, model 6 (in 30-06).
He said make me an offer and i did. Should make
a good, quick handling, deer rifle for this Fall.

A couple pix i found online. Mine shows like this one.
Nice wood, no marks to speak of on blueing.

All original and correct from factory. Made 1981-1987
for 6 short years. Detachable Magazine that holds 4 rds.
Available in 6mm, 243, 270, 308, and 30-06
Cool feature of this model is the headstamp of the cartridge
the rifle is chambered for located on bottom of the rifle just
forward of the mag well.

Good morning all. It's another muggy morning in Houston. I sure hope the hordes are sleeping in this morning I just do not feel like dealing with them. And in the aftermath of the mass of destruction the hordes cause... you have to deal with FEMA. :( No, I just want a nice peaceful five to six mile walk this morning. Each of you have a great day!
