Arthur hurts all over from time to time, but almost always where
my thumbs hook to my hands. I wonder if shooting had anything
to do with that? An old timer told me to rub WD40 on my hands.
I tried it once and believe it did give some relief, but I thought
maybe that isn't too healthy? I hope it doesn't get worse as I
grow older. (I'm only 81 now). On the plus side, Arthur helps
me predict the weather, and he is pretty good at it. I know there
are lot worse problems, but I just wondered if anyone else knows
Arthur?

Know him well. Knees shoulders and right hand. Lost 70 pounds about 5 years ago so the knees bother me a lot less these days. Had shoulder surgeries and they are not as bad either. The hand problem comes and goes. Not related to shooting it is from an old injury. I am 63 soon and have been dealing with this stuff for maybe 20 years. It could be worse. Mine is osteoarthritis not the rheumatoid thankfully.

First, he's NOT my friend. Arthur, as the op calls it, has been hanging around with me for 23 years. Glad to say it's 99% under remission, thanks to some great drugs I thank God for on a daily basis. My hands are a bit crooked, but still very functional for work and play(pulling the trigger on my guns).
As a child , I often brushed off my Grandma's weather predictions because of her arthritis. I quickly became a believer when it struck me with a vengeance in '93. The first couple of winters, living in western Colorado, I not only could predict snow storms, but also the severity; mostly by the pain/swelling in my right knee.

There is surgery available to "help" this condition. It involves the removal of a very small bone at the base of the thumb where the joint is attached to the wrist. I had it done a few years ago to my left thumb. The surgeon removed the bone and replaced it with a piece of ligament he removed from my arm. Different surgeons do it different ways. In my case, my right thumb is just as bad but I will not get the surgery on that thumb. At least to me, the surgery was not what I expected. While it did relieve the pain it has caused other problems that affect other parts of my hand. I've also had shoulder surgery on both my left and right shoulders with not so great results. My feeling now is that I will not go for any more such surgeries unless I'm in so much pain I can't stand it.

I agree krell1. No more surgery for me unless it's either surgery or bye
bye. As you imply they generally solve one problem but leave you with
a different one. I nearly died from one surgery...but then I probably would
have died without it.

both shoulders, both knees as of late. Australian Dream is wonderful stuff. runs uncle Arthur off for a few hours. you can use it up to four times a day. like brill cream, a little dab will do ya. rub it in til it's almost dry. takes a little while to work but will feel the relief. lee

I know Arthur. So far its just a passing acquaintance. He visits my hands, knees and shoulders from time to time.
Where he's really pissing me off is that he's taken up permanent residence in the middle finger of my right hand to the point where I can't completely close it. Normally not much of a problem. However, when shooting a revolver and with that finger not closing good, the back of the trigger guard beats the hell out of the middle knuckle. So much so that it only takes a few rounds to break the skin and start me bleeding.
I'm experimenting with gloves, changing my grip and different stocks with mixed results. Still working on it.
I can live with various aches and pains. Done it for years and gotten used to it. But this one little thing that interferes what something I enjoy doing is really wearing on my very last nerve.

I got a shot of Depo-Medrol 80 mg for another problem in early May, and after about a week I found my hands quit aching and having shooting pains. It lasted nearly two months. I discussed it with my primary MD and he checked just what I had been given, and nodded his head, yes that could give relief, and it has very little side effect and he would authorize a shot as needed (within reason on how frequent). I just got my 2nd one about two weeks ago after the pain returned, and now it has gone again. Discuss with our Dr. maybe this could benefit you also.

Both knees and my left thumb.
I usta Rollerblade a lot, the muscles in my legs developed unevenly and caused my knee cap to not track correctly.
I've got back of the knee cap arthritis.
Cross training with biking and hiking helped a lot.
I still need to be careful not to push it too hard or my knee swells up.
I keep the ice pack handy.

It was about thirty years ago that I was kicked while shoeing a horse. I bent down to rise a front leg and got cow kicked. That horse fractured my jaw and dislocated it. I have since developed arthritis in the temporomandibular joint. At times it’s tender and painful, more so in cold weather. When the pain ratchets up I tend not to talk much.

The VA doctor suggested medication if the pain gets too intense but after hearing all the side effects I decided to grunt it out for now.
