I fanally drank the M&P Shield 9mm Kool Aid!

Loved my shield. I had to let mine go a few months ago to a railroad buddy of my to help pay for some car repairs. I'm picking up another one next week. Just curious.. Has anyone here heard of any "bugs" or issues in the newly produced 9mm shields? The one I regretfully sold was manufactured early/mid 2014 I think. It ran flawlessly and I had 100% confidence in it. I figure it's still the same ole concealed carry workhorse pistol that I miss so much, but figured I'd ask around and see if there was anything to watch for.

The new law has a clause that specifies that the 10 round limit does not apply to active law enforcement or retired law enforcement. I am having trouble finding the text, though, Everything has been withdrawn since the FPC lawsuit forced DOJ to withdraw the regs they tried to push through as "emergency rules without public comment.

DOJ has purposely not publicized mush information on the new laws, unlike the first ban where it specified the media campaign they had to follow. Probably only 5% of the public knows what the new laws are, and only 20% EVEN KNOW THERE ARE NEW LAWS.

Sounds to me like they're getting set up to prosecute unknowing offenders and blaming the gun owner for not knowing the gun laws.

I am amazed by the conceal-ability of the Shield. In the Bianchi Model 100 IWB Holster I bought, it is as comfortable as my Bersa FireStorm 380 to carry inside my jeans. It is so slim and compact.

Years ago, I had a Kel-Tec P-11 9mm. It was a good little weapon for a duty back-up weapon, but was only capable of minute of trash can lid accuracy. While I carried it on duty as a back up in an ankle holster or jacket pocket, I NEVER carried it as an off duty piece. I just didn't have that much faith in it.Back in those days, I had a Charter Bulldog 3" .44 special for an off-duty weapon.

Lately (prior to getting the Shield), I had been using my Bersa 380 for EDC here up in the rural Nor-Cal foothills, and my Glock or CZ83 when I would go Sacramento, SF Bay area, or So-Cal. Now with the Shield, it will probably be my only EDC weapon.

Granted, my Glock is 15+1, and the Shield with Magguts +2 is 10+1. God help me if 11 rounds of Gold Dot 124 +P is not enough!

As to Glock vs S&W Shield triggers: I eally feel the S&W trigger is far superior to the Glock's.

I have had my Glock 19 for 23 years, and fired tens of thousands of rounds through it. Even though I have a Glock factory 3.5 lb. disconnector from a 17L long slide in it, it is still only capable (at least in my hands) of combat accuracy (minute of Goblin, so to speak).

The Shield, after only 100 rounds, I was easily doing 3-4" groups at 10 yards, off hand, using a Weaver stance, one shot per second, or so. I can't wait to put another 100 rounds or so through it, so I can really see what it is capable of.

Good video on Speer Gold Dot +P (regular and short barrel) in 3' barrels... Absolutely no difference in performance (in a 3" barrel) between the two, with perfect 12" to 18" penetration and expansion. I'm glad my Shield loves the stuff!

Like you I love my Gen 4 Glock 19, 1,200 rounds with no problems. As to my 9mm Shield I had one light primer strike in the first 100 fired but after cleaning the firing pin channel no problems with 800 rounds through her.

Factory Shield mags and mags with Magguts +2s Left to Right:

Factory 7 round magazine
Factory 7 round with Magguts +2 (9 rounds)
Factory 8 round magazine
Factory 8 round with magguts +2 (10 rounds)

Notice the 7 round with the Magguts is less than 1/4" longer than a standard 7 round, and significantly shorter than a factory 8 round!

I too have seen your thread in our local communist forum. I'm a little new here, but I did port my Shield thread over.

Your comparison photo is much more eye appealing than mine for sure. I'm glad to see other Californians here.

Stay strong my brothers and sisters.

Update: Shot about 200 rounds more mixed FMJ, HP, and Gold dot. Still zero malfunctions. Love this little guy. Was bouncing a can at 15 yards off hand. NICE!

I did have one problem with a 7 rounder with the Magguts follower and spring, though. When I dropped the empty mag, the follower popped out the top of the magazine. It only happened with one 7 rounder (9 rounder), but never with the 8 rounder (10 rounder). For now, my carry 7 rounder will just have the Magguts cup and lock plate, making it an 8 rounder, still shorter than the factory 8. I left my two 8/10 rounders that I keep in the glove compartments of my vehicles with the full +2 set up.

I'll get ahold of magguts and see what they say. For now, the cup still gives me 8+1 with the short mag and factory spring/follower.

I di have 100% confidence after 400 rounds of assorted ammo with zero malfunctions! It is my EVERY day carry weapon now!

MG had a recall on the Gen2 followers a little while back, however I am unsure of what the defects were. Check to see if they are the affected followers.

Check the spring orientation. It does not work both ways.

In that case, definitely check with MG about the recall. They may just swap out new ones for you.

It really is interesting how MG swapped from a captured follower in the Gen1 to the free floating in the Gen2 though. I still have my Gen1 springs and may just buy the baseplate to upgrade my spare mags.

imarangemaster...now when those new CA ammo purchase regs kick in, come on over to Reno and we'll load you up! No questions asked!

Counted, and I actually have 550 rounds of Gold dot 124 +P. 250 rounds are 2015 production, the others are about 8 years old. It was our duty load on the SO for awhile, and IIRC, NYPD has issued it for years for their Glock 19s.
Here is a copy and paste of some ballistic gel tests recently. Skip to the bottom if you want to rethink your 9mm carry ammo choice

Using a Shield .45
Here is results from 4 layers of denim test using a 6x6x20" clear ballisticgel block. Temp 28degrees, humidity 47% and pressure 30.3inHg. Previous test done with bare gel is further below

With both HST and Ranger 230+p and 230 standard pressure was very inconsistent. Around half the rounds would clog with denim and pass through 20" with no expansion. When they did expand penetration was only 11 1/2" This was the exact same results as Federal HST 230+P and standard pressure. 3 out of 4 rounds would fail to expand and passed through
Hornady XTP 200 gr +P also failed to expand 3 out of 4 times and then one time it went to 19" and .51 expansion.
Magtech 230gr JHP failed to fire! The striker would not even dent the primer!
Underwood 120gr Xtreme defense did very well and penetrated to 17" 4 out of 4 times. Of course no expansion with the solid copper bullet
Corbon 165+P DPX expanded beautifully and penetrated 9-10" each time.
The clear winner today was Corbon 185+P DPX.
4 out of 4 expanded beautifully and penetrated to 14 1/2-15" each time. It also performed exactly the same in bare gel.
The bare tests are below

I did a impromptu clearballistics FBI BARE gel test about a week ago.
I used Shield 45
6"x6"x16" clearballistics FBIgel with wood backstop
It was 17 degrees F, 61% humidity, Pressure 30.3%
I used my .45 Shield
Federal HST 230gr= penetrated 11 1/2" expanded .82
Federal HST 230 gr +P= penetrated 11 3/4" expanded .80
Critical duty 220 +P = passed through block. recovered in wood .51"
Underwood Extreme defense 120gr=passed through block recovered in wood
Winchester Ranger 230gr (RA45T)=penetrated 11 1/2" expanded .75-.85"
Widest petal was .85
Winchester Ranger 230gr+P (RA45TP)=penetrated 14 3/4" expanded .75-.85
I then shot 4 more rounds of Ranger 230gr+P and they went from 14 1/2" to 14 7/8"
So with my little test I will be carrying the Ranger 230+P.
Just thought you might be interested in the results.
The Federal HST expand beautifully but don't even penetrate to 12" with the shorter Shield barrel.
Here is update.
I did Speer Gold dot 230gr Standard pressure=13"penetration with .625 expansion
Corbon DPX 185gr+P=14 1/2" penetration with .75 expansion
I still like the Ranger 230+P so far with 14 1/2-14 3/4" penetration and .85 expansion at widest point.
One Corbon turned completely around 180degrees
Both expanded nicely
ON SIDE NOTE:
I also tested 9mm out of a Glock 43 with 4 layers of Denim
HST 124gr standard pressure was the clear and decisive winner by a land slide
5 out of 5 penetrated to 18 1/2" and all expanded beautifully
Hst 147 and 147+P also clogged with denim and some expanded and some passed through 20" block
Speer gold dots 124+P did not perform well. Only 1 expanded and penetrated to 14". the 4 others did not expand and passed through 20"
I did two .357 sig out of a G33
Corbon 125gr DPX pentrated 14 1/2" and expanded nicely
Underwood 125gr gold dot ROCKED the block. It hit so hard the block lifted up.
Penetrated 16" and expanded beautifully to .60"

Also my MagGuts perform flawlessly in my Shield. I only use them in my 8 rounder's
