4506-1 with Forward Cocking Serrations?

I picked up a 4506-1 that has forward cocking serrations on the slide. I had not seen that before and cannot find pictures of another via Google search.

Has anyone seen or own one? Wondering if it was a special order or just rare.

I have never come across a 4506-1 with forward cocking serrations on the slide. Without getting a letter on the gun, it would be hard to know whether they were done at the factory - which is possible - or were done aftermarket by a gunsmith.

There was a 4516-2 with forward cocking serrations shown here a year or so ago. IIRC the owner picked it up at an estate sale. First one of those I ever saw.

The Performance Center, back when that meant something and it was in a seperate building from the main factory, use to offer modifications to 3rd gen pistols - including forward serrations - and Match grade barrels with bushings. Similar to what they did with the PC 45CQBs. Perhaps a lucky prior owner had some work done on the 4506-1 you are looking at.

But I dont know how one would verify that, short of an invoice left in the original box. Want to sell it at a small profit? Regards 18DAI

The slide certainly looks factory original or at least sent back to S&W for the work.

No indications on the box beyond year (1992) and just the usual papers came with it.

Apologies for side-tracking from the original subject 4506, but this is a very curious photo you have uploaded, can you share more about that? You reference an 845 but I'm not sure what you have shown in this picture--

The hammer absolutely looks like an 845 and yes, the forward serrations do look like the second run "Model of 1998" 845, however the trigger is way out forward, to the point where it suggests DA/SA, which the 845 is absolutely not.

Further muddying the waters, if that were a second run 845, it should have an etched Performance Center logo on the right side of the frame and further still, the round hammer block safety area (where an ambi lever would be if it weren't a 5" PC Target gun) should be flat black on an 845.

Gotta love Smith & Wesson! Almost makes you think those guys did stuff like this just in hopes that it might drive a few collectors bonkers one day down the road...

The gun in the 1st photo I posted says Smith & Wesson 845 Model of 1998 .45 ACP caliber pistol. Scarce Single Action only target model.

It's a decock/safety. I have a some older 645's and now looking forward to seeing how this 4506 shoots in comparison. Some dry fire already shows the trigger to be better and sights better for my eyes.

Not 100% definitive, but the Std Catalog of S&W 3rd Ed. shows that model number from the box as one of the normal 4506-1 product codes.

108163 is the standard fixed sight 4506-1. Full feature list is: "5" S TDA 8SH FS AM SB, 1992-94 (4506-1); 1995-1999 with 3rd trigger guard".

S - Stainless
TDA - Traditional Double Action
8SH - 8 shot
FS - Fixed Sights
AM - Ambi safety
SB - Blade Front Sight

Based on this, those serrations may have not been factory original. Certainly makes for an interesting and different 4506, though!
