Speaking of hangovers, if you want a really good (meaning bad) one, get drunk on hot buttered rum, a favorite drink in 18th century America. In fact, whiskey distilling started taking off here mostly once American distillers were cut off from the plentiful molasses of the Caribbean by the Revolutionary War; before that, the people's drink was rum.
Back in college, on occasion of a seminar on colonial history, a group of us had the brilliant idea of an evening of "colonial drinking". After lubricating ourselves properly with some fancy brandy and the kinds of heavy wines that were all the rage in colonial America, like Port and Madeira, we started mixing rum, butter, hot water, sugar, etc. This was long before the Internet provided practical recipes.
Nobody had more than hazy and fragmented memories of the rest of the night. But we still carry painful and vivid memories of the day after .....
