Scan your DL to buy Ammo At Wal Mart

WITH A NAME LIKE DICKS.

I expect it from DICKS, WW I've been asked sometimes & not others. Hold my spam/junk mail/ telemarketers. About "THEM" being able to find me??? I CAN'T CONTROL those who steal/hack or break the law, I CAN CONTROL those I willingly give my info to & am too old/unafraid to worry about the Boogeyman.

Got my license checked (not scanned) this week at WM for some shotgun ammo. Sometimes they do, most of the time they don't. In Kalifornistan handgun ammo requires 21YO, long gun ammo 18YO.

The cashier doesn't make the rules, just will get fired for not following 'em. If the question pops up on the register, they gotta ask.

When I do business with the local building department, the payment process is grotesquely cumbersome. A cashier runs your driver license through some kind of scanner. Why, I have never asked, and the caliber of employee suggests they won't know the answer.

DLs with a gold star ("Real ID") contain machine-readable biometric data that can be shared nationally and internationally.

Not sure how it works in the US but here, when I scan a drivers license (using the camera function on my work issued iPhone) it simply links into the same database that I access on a desktop computer in the office to tell me name, last know address, date of birth, criminal convictions and warrants issued. I can't even access traffic infringements which are available from the desktop. Without that database link to 'read' the scan I get only a barcode photograph.

As for biometrics, nope. No fingerprints, DNA profiles or retinal scans, which is what biometrics really are. Everything else is just data.

The scan is the best check for fake ID's. Not justifying it, just explaining it . . .

They ask my birth date--i always lie about it. period, end of story. Wm here hasnt sais anything about scanning a dl at all. I wonder if it just depends on what State you live in?

The source I read that said "biometrics" didn't elaborate. But they could have been exaggerating, claiming a digitized photo was "biometrics." Or the description of hair and eye color, weight, and height. Those are technically biological metrics used to differentiate individuals, but they're printed right on the license so it's redundant.

We don't supply fingerprints, a retinal scan, or DNA for a DL. Not yet, anyway...

What about tobacco and alcohol? Many stores ask for ID to prove age before ringing them up - if you appear to be younger than the legal age.

Death by 1000 cuts......

These small (not really small) impositions are designed to make it too much trouble to own and use guns when enough of them are in place. It's siege warfare. They haven't succeeded in enacting any of their 'Bills' but this will do the same job. Quietly, over time, like a choking vine.

I reload nearly all of my own ammo.

After the last gun shop I worked for went belly up I took a job at the local walmart. Working the sports counter I would have to say that walmarts training programs are a joke and it is no surprise to see the litany of complaints about people who don't know anything about what they are selling.

That is part of the problem that they try to address by requiring ID for all kinds of purchases and they program it into the computer registers. They are a large, lawyer heavy corporation and deathly afraid of violating Federal, State or Local laws when selling anything that might be age restricted. Too much afraid of lawsuits and bad media but they don't want to miss out on any potential money stream either.

The current program for ammo sales requires entering the customers birth date, now it's pretty obvious that some people are more than old enough to buy any ammo they want but the computer won't let the sale proceed without a date so one must be entered. As to scanning an ID, never heard any such thing but some areas might be considering it (or someone was passing on corporate rumor, I've heard some pretty stupid things myself from employees). Walmart in this area sells basic shooting ammo in popular calibers and they are cheap. Hard to compete with in a society where price is seemingly the most important thing. A shop I was with years ago had the misfortune to have a Walmart @ a mile away and to compete for basic target ammo sales we carried a lot of off brands, sold bulk and surplus ammo to get a share of that market which is a vital, daily income stream (gun profit margins are small, ammo accessories and services are what keeps small shops open) and without enough of that the "out of business" signs go up.

Im a regular at Wm in my area-a certain store in particular. They know me so well they dont ask--unless a newbi employee is there-then I ie about my birthdate.

I give my phone number as (Hawaii area code) 808-867-5309. I did it at Sears when I was buying some tools once and the clerk turned the screen towards me and asked "which one are you?" There were almost 100 entries (it was 3 or 4 different screens full) with that number:D

Once upon a time when NC went to the new license, the new ones had a magnetic strip/barcode on the back.

It was "so that HP can swipe it in their patrol cars" and get your information.

Now that I'm a law enforcement officer I've only seen ONE thing that can read the magnetic strip/barcode on the back.

Care to guess what it is?

The Intox EC/IR-II......the "Breathalyzer"

The magnetic strip/barcode on my Intox Analyst card is the EXACT same.

Good point. I've never heard of any of them scanning the IDs for tobacco or alcohol.
They do that here in some stores where cigarettes are sold. Instead of staring at your D.O.B and trying to count backwards they just wipe your DL (if you appear to be under 27) and your age is automatically calculated

Why can't you buy ammo out of state?!!!!

In mass and ct you need a ammo card or a ccw permit in ct to buy ammo. These new rules seem to spread once one state does it others follow. I figure to be a step ahead of this why not issue a nationwide ccw permit. We can ccw carry in any state, buy ammo and guns in any state. Use a credit card type reader for the national ccw permit.

AHA!!! Given the general inability of clerks to make change without access to a supercomputer, this seems to be a plan to maintain the low IQ of the staff.

Darn I remember buying ammo at the gas station, no questions asked.

Was at our local Wal Mart today to buy some Federal 22 ammo. Clerk had to look at my DL to see if I was old enough. Said soon they will be requiring a scan of your drivers license to sell you ammo. Asked if it was a city or State thing and they said a Wal Mart requirement coming soon. They must want out of the firearms business again.
i would have demanded to talk to a manager about that and would have never shown my DL to some clerk.

Google "Charlie Wenzel." ;)

So why are you even online? This website does show where you're located.... Not hard to hack if someone wants to
Pretty sure the site does it's best to protect personal info.
Locate my "general" area perhaps. Finding my EXACT street address, among 1,000's of others, doubtfull. If someone has the skills & strong enough desire, have at it. I won't let you in the pool, but would be happy to turn the hose on you.

For a non Californian you have a very good grasp of the leftist agenda. We keep trying to tell Free Staters this but they just laugh & brag about how they are in & out with their guns in 5 minutes...
