If you thought a person has entered your residence in the night while you are sleeping, what gun would you grab first? Shotgun or pistol and why you chose that one.

You're going to get one or two opinions on this one. :)

It depends on many variables, but best to have available and use that which you are best trained and competent to use.

That would be a pistol for me. It is also the weapon I can best quickly and effectively use with one hand.

I have a handgun and a shot gun close by. We live rural and if help could be summoned could be a long wait,

Most times my gun to repel borders will be a Mossie 12G 9shot loaded to fire 5 double 0 buck with 4 slugs behind.

My capable wife will also have a pistol. For her that is the better option!

Since your scenario is that they are already inside, speed is paramount, so the closest gun, the night table pistol is grabbed first.

Currently, I wouldn't have a shotgun (or any long gun) in my bedroom so a pistol would be it.

That's of course subject to change based on how this world we live in continues to evolve....

I have a handgun near me always that is loaded. With handgun in hand chances are I also might head to the closet to obtain the Mossy 12ga with 00 buck. Staying in the closet I will not run out of ammo or guns.

WHAT CAN YOU GET HANDS ON FIRST?

Clearing the house in poor light after awakening suddenly with a handgun held close to my body would be harder for someone to grab & possibly wrestle it away from me, it's also easier to maneuver in potential close quarters. OTOH I don't like to keep all my eggs in 1 basket & think having other options as well is a good idea. As good as I think I MAY be, I can be a heavy sleeper. Getting the C-pap & wrist splints off won't help. Someone with minimal skills specifically there with the intent on doing me harm will likely do so. IMO :( The smart thing FOR ME, ( LE not far away, no kids & no material items worth dying for) would be to hole up in the BR & call 911.

I'd go for the most accessible, which would be the Glock 19 with tactical light that sits in the top dresser drawer next to the bed. If I had prior warning, the Mossberg SP, loaded with buck and slug would be my primary choice.
