DANG!!!! Worst of luck. I would sure think that a quality gun shop would have noticed it. However, if they are busy and a lot in my area are, I can certainly see where it would have slipped past. The telling tale as to their qualification is how they handle the situation.
Best of luck to you. Certainly feel for you after all the elation you showed in previous posts. Huge let down
Yeah, the search begins anew....I am pretty bummed. I was really enjoying this one.
Bad luck, but I doubt you'll have much trouble selling it here after you range test it with .44 ammo.
I only have about 12 rounds of 44 Mag laying around, and those are Black Talons that a buddy gave me years ago (back when I didn't even own any 44's, special or Mag)
If your aa big 411 mag fan I understand your pain. But, if I pick up a gun marked as a model 58 I would assume it was a 41 mag. You yourself took it to the range and fired some 41 mags through it when you first got it and still didn't realize something was up until the 2nd trip.
So, I can understand how the gun shop goofed up assuming it was a 41 mag. Like stated I am sure if its a 44 mag and you don't want to keep it you can easily turn it over. Fixed sight 44 mags are pretty hard to find.
Yup, sometimes I am a slow learner. The rounds were not swimming in the chambers like I thought that they would in a 44. I actually had to go drag out my 44 Mag Mountain gun to see if they looked the same in it (they do). I have years of shooting under the belt and did not catch it on the first go, fortunately, there were no problems.
I am on the fence about keeping it. I really had my heart set on a 41 Mag and finding this was actually was a 44 left me lost and somewhat upset. I own several pre-war 44 specials (and they are really neat guns) and two modern 44 Mags (that I hardly ever shoot or carry). I had a fleeting though about tracking down a 41 Mag cylinder and then having the barrel re-lined, but that seems excessive for what I want.
My dad was first in line if I decided to sell as he is big into Jovino's and Behlert's snubby conversions (I may have enabled him a bit in those regards). I am sure that there are several 44 Mag devotees that would jump on the chance for one like this.
I have about 50 or so re-loaded 44 specials in the range box. They are 240gr LSWC with a healthy dose of sr4756 under them. Maybe I can break away from watching baby James long enough to test them out. Who knows? maybe I will fall in love all over again with the 44
Thanks for all of the kind and supportive words guys. I'll make it through this, but I will still be a 41 Mag hound
