...the average non firearm folks ....
I'd guess the "average" of any group can reason with logic, it's the extremists in any category that make the most noise.

I take almost all my non-shooting friends and relatives to the range if they visit me in SC, and they all enjoy themselves.

Until recently, my sister used to denigrate my firearms hobby, but then surprised me by saying she'd like to try shooting. I got my LEO SIL to assist her at his range in NY. Afterward, she said it was the most fun she ever had.

Of course not!

We are seen as enthusiastic hobbiests interested in the minutiae of the objects of our fascination.

We accumulate examples of variations of the objects of our interest just as do numismatists and philatelists.

The objects of our interest have secondary uses aside from being inherently interesting as do stamps and coins.

Nuts? Us? Naw!

Yes.

I have some family that say that. They aren't anti gun but because they're not into guns they don't understand why you need so many and when some explanations work.....like large vs small gun then they don't get why you have multiples of some. Or why not just get rid of one for the other.

If you want/need a gun fine! If for some reason there's a need for two..that's ok but why do you waste money on 3, 4, 10, 30, 100 with some duplicates.

It's one of those things that we all probably say about hobbies we don't understand or just not intr in

It all depends on what your definition of "gun nut" is. Shooting, hunting, and guns have been an interest and hobby for me since I was about nine or ten years of age. I do not obsess over guns, but I find them quite interesting. I have had other hobbies and interests over the years some of which I still actively pursue. For the decade I was scuba diving I was a definite "scuba nut". Five decades of gun related interests makes me comfortable around most others that have similar interests in guns, but not all of us are "gun nuts". I'd agree that I might be a "nut", but I'm not a "gun nut".

The environment I have created here in these beautiful sand dunes is very conducive to entertaining. Its not quite what Hickok45 has in Tennessee, but I am working on that. Neighbors visit to "shoot the range", which is pretty cool. I don't think there are many antis here, its more like active and inactives. But I am actively doing my part to encougrage activity. Paper plates don't stand a chance around here.

I believe it works like this: The more fanatic they are in their hatred/fear of all guns and all gun owners the more they believe that EVERYONE who even owns one gun is a warmongering, aggressive, paranoid with a cowboy or Rambo complex and an inferiority complex.

A lot of people don't care for guns especially but they do have a more reasonable understanding of those that enjoy owning, collecting, and shooting guns and have no problem with that or any desire to curtail our 2A rights. My sweetie is one of those. In fact She has told me over and over that she is not interested in guns in any way but feels better and safer when we are out because I carry. She is supportive of the 2A for everyone but chooses a non lethal PD. Its a wasp spray that shoots a powerful spray about 40' could possibly put your eye out if it hits you in the face and will definitely take the fight out of anyone.

I guess there are moderates and extremists on on both sides of the issue.

I don't think the average person around does, but I also think it depends on where you are. Tennessee is a gun friendly state. Most folks here grew up around guns and many have gun owners in their family or friends.
But in new York, California or other very restrictive place, Its likely a completely different story. Surroundings play a large part in attitude.

I do not consider "gun nut" to be a negative description of a person, although I recognize that some folks do. I am perfectly willing to let evidence OTHER than those two words inform me as to whether I should consider the user a shortsighted and probably stupid bigot.

Considering the benign meaning of the phrase, I reckon that the vast majority of us posters here are gun nuts.

I think it's human nature - independent of political beliefs or specific hobbies - to paint a group that is not known very well by an individual with a broad brush. Life gets interesting when we learn about specific people in those groups we don't know very well and learn the intricacies of their situation/hobby/belief.

I've had a couple of situations where people have known me for YEARS without knowing of my shooting hobby. And the moment that hobby came out in conversation they were more than stunned - because I, someone who I pretty confidently believe had respect for me, didn't realize I was "one of those guys". But given their knowledge of me, and the conversation we had, it became apparent their image of who a "gun nut" is became more complex......because a single brush no longer covered the entire group.

Gun enthusiast is probably a more proper name/term then "NUT" in describing the description of us ..

I don't think any of us are a crazy or eccentric person which is the definition of a Nut !!

Well Maybe !!
