Why so much hate towards the magnas???

i only have one Smith revolver left. 15-2 and it wears PC magnas, my preference. I tried to go the t grip route too, i love the look, but the t grip positioned my "up yours" finger knuckle right against the back of the triggerguard so the t grip went and i just go with the PC magnas. None of my revolvers or pistols have rubber grips, but i don't hate em or folks that use em. This thread is ridiculous

Good question. I believe every picture of Elmer Keith(I know some here aren't as fond of this old gentleman as I) I saw he had magnas on his revolvers? Even his model 29. Can't remember ever seeing a grip adapter on them?

Every time I saw Elmer Keith at my Grandfather's home in Coeur d'Alene, his revolvers always had custom grips made of some smooth white stuff. I guess they were what are referred to today as barbeque guns. As a general rule Mr. Keith didn't open carry them - especially in Grandma's living room!

Other than that, it was hard to see exactly what was going on because Mr. Keith, Grandpa, Dad, and a couple of uncles often each had a stinky cee-gar or a pipe stoked up and fuming to beat the band.

The magnas are a perfect fit on my SB K frame snub equipped w/a grip adapter.

I like mine on my model 6” 48. But I prefer a coke shaped custom on my 4” 27.
The original stocks on my 6” 2nd model HE.44 seem to fit just fine, too.

Maybe it’s a balance thing.

You should try service grips if you don't like magnas..

The beauty of revolver grips is that its very easy to change them to something that fits your hand. All sized and shapes of grips for all sizes and shapes of hands. ;)
If you like magnas, more power to ya. But they just don't fit me. But I don't hate 'em either. While magnas with a T-grip isn't perfect for me either, I do have that set-up on several of my guns. It does work.
Likewise, many of my guns wear target grips. Even they aren't perfect for me, but again its a lot better.
Don't worry about what others think. Just go with what's right for you. ;)

Magnas are my favorite on a S&W revolver.

I agree with the OP that the key to learning to love magnas is gripping the gun as high as you can - I often have to back off just a bit because the hammer spur is hitting the webbing between my thumb and index finger. I may eventually transition to spurless hammers on some of my guns for that reason.

Once I started choking up on the grip, I "got" magnas. I prefer them with a t-grip, but I'm ok with just magnas.

That said, the most comfortable grip I have found are the rubber grips with wood inlays on the Ruger GP100. I started with the large size, but now have the compacts on my Wiley Clapp GP100 - either way they are fantastic. I don't know why I can't find a S&W grip that fits me as well, but magnas with a t-grip comes pretty close.

Who says people hate them? With a T grip adapter many consider them the perfect grip.

I've read a lot of articles and seen quite a few videos where people complain or talk about how they do not like them or how they quickly replaced them with something aftermarket and oversized.

I agree, I think a lot of people get so used to autos they feel more comfortable holding it the same way, but if you choke up to the top it fits right, maybe not perfect for everyone, but it's the right feel for that type of gun. I always thought the magnas were an essential part of a lot of these guns, Colt included. I've seen 4 inch Diamondbacks that had magna grips and looked awesome. Same with 4 inch 19's 581/681 686/686 models. There's a nickel 581 with magna grips for sale on line I keep looking at, and it looks unbelievable, and I feel a lot in the way of aesthetics is lost when replaced with target grips. That 581 looks like a modern 6 shooter. I was bored the other day and I've been wanting to address this matter for some time now, so I figured why not, especially after seein the Lady Smith with mags and the regular one with rubber grips I figured it was time. I'm just curious to know why people prefer target grips and why they dislike magnas. I think that at least some people out there might like them if they held it like a six shooter instead of an auto, but then again some probably still wouldn't because they are too small. However there have to be some who just don't realize it. That's for the input.

I am not a Magna guy, but then I have huge hands and I think a lot of it is about your hands. That and your grip and some of what you learned to shoot with. Targets work better for ME. But, I have experimented and even made a few grips. I actually prefer round butt guns with stocks that cover the backstrap a bit and are smaller at the bottom because my little finger, like everyone else's is short. On hard recoiling guns I like the grips fat. But a set of my grips made for me would suck for someone with small hands.

Not a case of any one grip style being wrong as much as wrong for a particular shooter.

Does anyone else agree with me on this or am I in a drastic minority like I think I am??
I "liked" your OP just for the writing effort and for the interesting, provocative read. :D But I don't hate the Magnas or any other S&W factory grip that I can think of. In fact, I am searching as we speak for some nice condition, period-correct, original factory grips to replace the rubber aftermarket ones on the pre-18 that I recently bought. :)

Hate "Magna's"............No..... got a box full of um!

Like Magna's with T-grip even better.......... yes..... got more than a few set up this way!!

Like Spegel Boot Grips and Extended Boot Grips even better ....... YES!.......... on my EDC guns!!!!

I also like shoes/boots that fit my feet..... better than ones that are too small or too large!!!!!!! Oh ya..... and a comfy pair of socks please! :D
