I am typing this on a 2008 vintage MacBook Pro 15in. laptop. It's my daily driver. We have iMacs, iPads and 2 MacBook Airs in this house so I'm a bit prejudiced.
Having said that, if all you do is check email and surf the web and watch cat videos, why not get a 300 dollar Chromebook and call it good?

I have a HP with Windows 10 bought about 4 months ago and have had zero problems with it .. I'm online using it 10 to 14 hours aday ..

A little over a year ago I bought an "Open Box" 17" H-P (W10) at Best Buy - at about 40% off with the new 1-year factory warranty. So far I haven't regretted anything. The 17" screen makes a BIG difference.
Something really weird happened recently - a hack attempt of my GMail account from the Ukraine, according to Google. That's where they traced it. I was locked out for awhile, but finally got back in (not easy). A suggestion, use all of the security features available for whatever eMail provider you use. Make absolutely sure that you understand how to activate them.

Something to consider - whatever you get, ensure it has all the things you need and then above ALL, how does the laptop keyboard layout feel? I have been using Dell's for the last 4 or 6 yrs for work and home , although latest work one is a Levono, but I use it as plugged into a docking station (normal external keyboard).
See how it feels
See if it has a DVD player, most don't nowadays - although you can stream most things
See if it has a card for your camera? Although I just send pictures to myself via email anymore....
MOST folks just need a standard, decent laptop, more RAM the better (if they offer 4, but it cost $50 for 8, take the 8, if they have 8 and offer 16... Processor speed is likely not a huge issue for almost everyone.
Windows 10 - I don't like the interface, but use a program called stardock that emulates windows 7 - I like that. Otherwise win10 is a good, solid OS - although for work I am still using Win7 and its stable as heck.

Is it OK that I still won't buy anything with Toshiba on the label? You almost can't help it because so many components of other computers are made by them. I guess I'm an old diehard Luddite but after they gave our submarine propeller technology away 40 years ago I haven't bought a Toshiba anything.

...been using a $300 HP laptop from Walmart for a few years now...

That'll get the job done. It won't be speedy for running programs, but for what you describe it's terrific.
