USELESS - Self Service Machine at Post Office

Went by Post Office to mail a book and a letter.
Met a NEW and UNIMPROVED machine.
Seems to have been designed by Larry, Curly and Moe.

Weighed book - Measured book - Postage calculated - 71 cents
Select Type of Shipping
Only offered Priority Mail and Express Mail
No MEDIA MAIL!

Also had problem trying to get postage for an overweight letter.
Calculated postage - 71 cents
Tried to buy postage ...
NOT ALLOWED Musts buy at least 29 cents

The one at my PO does not accept cash. It wants credit card only.

A lot of hassle just to buy a book of stamps to mail an impromptu letter.

Two years ago they put a new machine in a month before christmas. It was out of order every time I went to use it. The old machine worked ever time I tried to use it.

Now you got me started. My local PO has a huge blue drive-by mail box that has a throat so small that if somebody tries to insert anything but a small envelope it's plugged for the rest of the day.

Pain to use and that's for sure. But when the line at the P.O. is backed with at least for a half hour wait I'll opt for the machine every time.

Theoretically, nothing heavier than 13 ounces can be placed into a mailbox. I suppose the intent is to discourage people from sending bombs through the U. S. Mail.

So, basically, whether you get a new and improved self service machine or a standard postal employee, the quality of services remain the same.

Maybe your first mistake was expecting a USPS machine to provide the levels of service offered by living USPS employees at the counter. I doubt that the postal workers union would allow that.

The APWU (American Postal Workers Union) had no objections to the use of vending machines or self-service kiosks, or to the level of service they provided. Before they were removed from most major offices and stations, the kiosks and vending machines created new jobs within the service for personnel who stocked and repaired them.

Personally I think USPS is very good. The amount of mail they handle daily is astonishing. No other can even hold a candle to what they do. Use of machines is good in most cases. A failure of them is in a humans design, manufacture or use/abuse of them. Who is to blame for the design use and abuse of humans when they fail while trying to mail something? Same goes fo rmost everything we do.

Wait, just wait. I think you will be a lot happier when they come out with the "New and Improved!!" postal employee. "As seen on TV!"

Technically, the rule is that anything over 13 ounces that is mailed using stamps, as opposed to a postal meter, must be presented at the window. The smaller openings, which updated the old pull down drop boxes, help keep ne'er do wells from going "fishing" at their favorite drop box . . .

I am one of those outliers who has good experiences with USPS.

I think for what it costs it’s a great service.:)

Have not tried using a USPS vending machine though. Can’t recall ever seeing one...
