Hi folks, this may be an odd question!

In NJ, technically, if a motor vehicle is used commercially for the conduct of business, it is supposed to have a commercial registration, and bear the name and city of the business.

Apparently, my local Walmart has seen the need to hire a security service to patrol the parking lot. The service that was hired is based in NY (2 hours distant), and using a vehicle bearing passenger plates.

Since this is an out-of-state vehicle used for commercial purposes, shouldn't the vehicle have commercial plates and bear an ICC registration number?

Thanks for your help!

Not my area of expertise, but you may be thinking of motor carrier laws involving trucks over a certain weight.

In RI all trucks have commercial plates, I got stopped in NY a few times because I didnt have a company name on my truck, I told them whether you had a company or not you had to have commercial plates, they didnt buy it and wrote me up.

The unholy mess of different vehicle use and registration laws across this country is a disgrace. This is a perfect example. Don't get me started on tint and number plate laws, let alone inspections, or lack thereof.

There's your mistake right there... i.e., being in the State of New York! :p

My questions would be
Does it really effect you in any way?
Does it really matter in your life?
Who really cares?

Oh and IF it does matter then why not contact your state officials like dmv or police and inquire with them?

Or you could ask a bunch of folks on a gun forum web site for their expert advice

Is the Walmart parking lot a public highway, maintained by the state, with
road-use tax (vehicle registration) revenue?
