My wife has started to carry my 351PD, so now that it is in a carry rotation I want to delete that huge hammer spur. Rather than cut the spur off, I would like to get a second hammer to swap into the gun.

I thought I read once that a bodyguard hammer would work, giving a smaller spur. I am having a hard time locating one of these. What about a centennial hammer, would one of those fit?

I've also got my eyes out for just a regular hammer and bob it myself.

I believe the hammer from a 43c, 351C, or a 317 will work. Obviously, if it is not cut for the IL like your 351pd you will need to modify the flag or just remove it.

I gave my 351PD a "half bob", I cut off about half it just leaving about 1/4" of the checkered spur. I have not issues getting it out of my pants pocket.

Not sure it's the exact same thing, but I have used a 637 hammer on my 317 with no issues.

Looking at the firing face of the hammers, the rimfire hammer has a slightly taller surface, but apparently either one hits the 317's internal firing pin. The 637 hammer works fine on the 317, but the 317 hammer will not clear the frame and move into rest position on the 637.

Many early 317's came with a Bodyguard style hammer. Mine drew blood simply by cocking it. Find one of those and bob it, you'll be doing the world a favor. ;)

Edit: Here's an old thread of mine with a picture showing the 317 and 637 hammer faces side-by-side. You can see where the pin hits on each one. 317 is on the left.

Has your wife actually had any problem with the hammer and getting the gun out of carry?

I know this is a popular thing to do, but I have no problem getting my 651 PD out {with the hammer intact}.

I would only do this if a problem has surfaced.

Whatever you do, re-train after installing a new hammer. I've got a 350pd and can't understand why you'd want to swap the hammer for a "smooth" one. There's a reason those have hammer tangs on them - the main one is that you get a firm grip on the hammer so while pulling it back it doesn't slip and go off prematurely.

Once you go spurless the gun is only used in DA. Actually best to convert to DAO so you are not tempted to try and latch onto whatever nub is left.

Adios,
