Do you prefer the snub K frames over other lengths? UPDATE

I have 8 K frames in my little S&W collection. One is a Model 15-2 snubbie with a 1-7/8" barrel, six have a 4" barrel, and one is a 5" barrel. I like the snubbie 15-2 just because it stands out from the crowd, but I prefer the others when shooting.

I hope to one day add a Model 36 and a Model 60 to my collection with 2" barrels. I call 3" barrels "stubbies". They don't quite look right to me for some odd reason. I "get" the thought behind the 3" barrel - easier to conceal, easier to draw & present if needed, slightly better ballistics, etc. But dang it, they just look "odd" to me. lol Hence, the name "stubby" that I have adorned them with...

I also have 6 N frames, five of which are 6" barrels, and one Model 27-2 with a 6-1/2" barrel. I'm really partial to my N frames.

The K frame is a great CC option for its better balance and weight feel over the J frame. Anyone know if S&W ever made one in 327 Federal Mag?

It's weird but the snub 15 actually feels heavier than the 4" 15 which makes no sense.

Anyone else prefer the snub K frames?

I was thinking the same thing; I bought a M66-1 yesterday, 2-1/2" with round butt. It feels heavier than my M19-3 with a 4" barrel, even after I have just put the M19 down to pick up the M66. Weird.

Not sure yet if I prefer a snub nose over a longer barrel yet, but I sure do like this M66. I can hit the target as well at 15 yards with it as I can the M19 with the 4". I haven't tried it past 15 yards, mainly because I don't think I'd be happy with the result, and because it's further than I'd use it as a SD gun. I can do pretty well at 25 yards with the 4" barrel M19; "pretty well" meaning I can hit body mass enough times to do some harm.

I was impressed that the short barrel had no more jump or recoil than the M19 when shooting magnum loads.

I have a growing fondness for the short barrel Smiths...At the gun show yesterday, I added three more S&W wheelguns to my little family including two 2" guns...But my favorite is the Model 12-2 RB (don't tell the others I said that)...Nice bluing, no signs of abuse just normal holster wear...SCSW puts the serial number in 1954-56 range...As a relative newcomer here I am a little confused as I was under the impression that model numbering began post-1957, but this one is clearly marked Mod. 12-2 under the yoke and the C-prefix serial number is stamped on the bottom of the butt...

As a bonus this one was the most inexpensive of yesterday's acquisitions...:D...Ben

Would love to see some pictures. You sound like me at a gun show, finding nice guns is like eating potato chips, it's hard to stop at one.

Model numbering started in 1957, and since yours dates to 1954-56, yours may be one of the earliest "model" guns. The catalog states there are no absolutes, your SN could be a little later, or your model stamping a bit earlier (or both) than the ranges shown in the catalog.

Speaking of the SCSW, I finally got one the other day, ordered it from Amazon. Wow, I could sit up and read that thing all night.

I got my 4th edition from the same source a week ago or so, and it has replaced my current Pacific War research as my night time reading...

I'll see what I can do about pics of the M12 shortly and post here...:)...Ben

Here are the pics of my M12...Forgive the poor quality, I blame the early hour and only two pots of coffee so far...:p...Ben

4"+ for shooting. My favorite length for any handgun is 7.5". I did shoot a 2" model 15 yesterday though.
