I was at the county courthouse early this morning so I could be sworn in for the new term. It's a chilly and wet 35 degrees on the first morning of 2021, so after leaving the courthouse I drive back home to gear up and pickup Daisy, and with gun deer season over I grab my camera for a morning hike and see if I can get a few photos. Thought I'd share a few of the first 2021 pictures here.

I bought Daisy a new carrier and insulated cover so she can go with me on colder days. I don't let her ride in the cab of the truck and her summer time cage/carrier she usually rides in is a bit drafty in the winter. Today was our first test run and she seemed to be okay with it.

I drove a few miles over to a friend's farm who told me a few days ago he's been spotting some bald eagles hanging around. Mrs. Faulkner said she'd hang around and keep the fire going at home, so Daisy and I went off to see if we could get a shot (picture) of the eagles.

I suppose after all the creek visits last summer where Daisy likes to swim, she thinks water is for playing in even when the temperatures are in the mid 30's. She loves the water.

Not far ahead I noticed a hawk circling and stop to see if I can get a picture. Before I could get the shot I saw the hawk bank and dive into some tall grass on the edge of the fence line and pasture we're walking along. I checked to see if Daisy had seen it, but she's off galivanting around behind me, so I decide to see how close I an get to the hawk. I slipped around a large cedar tree and saw the hawk had caught something in it's talons. I'm sure it saw me before I saw it, so I was able to get a quick shot before it took to wing, but it only flew a few yards and landed in the open where I could actually see it a little better.

As I'm taking pictures of this hawk, I hear the call of another hawk above me and get a quick snap shot as it glides over.

Daisy and I continue around the edge of a large pond and I can see various waterfowl and want to try and get some pictures of them, but Daisy would have no part of it. Before I knew it she was on the water's edge barking at the geese and they immediately took flight.

Daisy seemed pretty pleased with herself for running off the geese, which is actually funny because her last encounter with geese back in the summer didn't go so well. As a 4 month old pup she went to check out a couple of geese and when they turned and charged her she came running back to me with her tail between her legs. I'm sure she feels avenged at this point.

We hiked around to the other side of the pond where the eagles were reportedly to be hanging out. I sat on the trunk of a downed tree and called Daisy up and had her sit next to me. It was then I saw a great blue heron on a stump that I'd not noticed before.

As I'm taking pictures of the heron, I heard the tell tale call of a kingfisher. I've tried numerous times to get pictures of kingfishers but have never before been able to get one in focus. This one landed on a limb and I was just able to get a picture before it took off again.

I finally caught a glimpse of a bald eagle and noted that it was on the far side of the pond that was inaccessible from where I was. The bank on the other side of the pond was flooded out due to the recent rain. So, instead, I pulled out my camera monopod and decided I'd try to get some long distance pictures and do the best I could with what I had to work with. I was disappointed because I was on the wrong side of the lighting, but with wildlife photos you just have to make do. .

For years there was a nesting pair of Bald Eagles in a tree about a hundred yards from the house out at the ranch.

One time I decided to climb up and take pictures of a pair of chicks in the nest while Mom was gone.
She got back before I got a chance to take the pictures and she very quickly convinced me that I should get the hell back on the ground and do it fast.

I wish we would have had cameras in hand one time when I was visiting my brother. He lives in our late dad's house overlooking Lake Erie. We were out in the yard when we saw an eagle fly over us on the way to Lake Erie. We could see the eagle lowering its talons on the way to the water like a plane lowering its landing gear. The eagle gets down to the water and the next thing we see is the eagle flying up with a fish bent double in its talons. That eagle didn't miss a beat
