Guard cat

In China for symbolic protection they have foo dogs, in Japan, komainu. My gf in Bellingham has 20-lb. "Charlie of Epic Whiskers", who also has a mighty impressive set of canine teeth :D (In truth though he's a wuss. When stuff happens, she calls him "I'm outta here Charlie")

Not my photograph, but I just came across a NYT article on the $95m restoration project of the magnificent library at Trinity College, Dublin (where the Book of Kells is kept) and this was the breathtaking pic at the head of the article. The work started in April and in October 2023 the library will close "for at least three years"

Wow!! look at that wooden barrel ceiling! Holding my breath here, and praying the restoration isn't a screwup like the one at Notre Dame de Paris that burned off the irreplaceable wooden roof..

Nah. We walked around for a while and wound up at a restaurant sponsored by the prefectural agricultural association as a promotion of their industry.

Basic food, quite reasonable prices, young polite staff, and tasty: Fresh chips and dips, assorted meat plate, sautéd cabbage with anchovies and garlic, sliced tomatoes with chopped onions... Coupla drinks.

That Boo Boo Monster place is a ramen noodle joint.

(Even after all these years, I get a kick out of the incongruous ways the Japanese use English.)

Thanks. Wouldn't have guessed in a million years.

Even after all these years, I get a kick out of how some "native English speakers" use English.

A few years ago I remember an article on a failed product launch in Asia, possibly Japan. As I recall, the product was canned baby food, and there was - quite naturally - a picture of a cute baby on the tin. "Quite naturally" to us, but apparently "to them" there was an unwritten understanding that the picture on a container represented the contents of said container. Went over like a lead balloon until they changed the artwork.

Just a tad over 55 years ago I was a 20 year old from a small steel town in Ohio. Uncle Sam sent me to the Far East and I decided to take advantage of it.
The first picture is at the eternal flame in Peace Park. The girls saw me taking pictures and figured I was American. They swarmed over to me and asked me a lot of questions. The girls were in high school and were around 14-16 years old. They would be in their early 70's today.
The next picture is a little girl who seems bored or tired of the whole outing. She has to be around 57-58 years old today. I hope she had a wonderful life.
Japanese gardens are amazing for all the work and detail that they put into them. These gardens are near the old/new Hiroshima castle. The castle is identical to the one that was totally destroyed from the bomb.

It would be something to see these sites again but age and time have intervened.

I still have some canned drinks from Tokyo sidewalk vending machines -

Cowpis Soda - say that out loud

Pocari Sweat - an electrolyte replacement drink, it is derived from scraping sweat off the fur of pocaris running in squirrel cages.
A pocari is a rodent similar to a big hamster, at least in my imagination.

Air - just what you need for a quick pick-me-up in smog laden Tokyo.
