SPAM under lock and key in NYC stores...

For some reason my Dad had to eat Spam for two weeks straight during WWII. He wouldn't allow it in the house.

My lovely bride is from Guam, where Spam is basically a national hero. All a Guamanian needs to survive is Spam, rice, and Tabasco Sauce. You can go through the drive-thru in the MacDonald's on Guam and get a Spam and rice breakfast.

I personally love the stuff.

There are numerous Spam-like "Luncheon Meat" knockoff brands to be found in stores, packed in very similar or identical rectangular metal cans. Many are house brands of the supermarket chains, like Wal-Mart, Albertson's, and Kroger. Some are national brands like Libby's, Prem, and Treet. Having tried some of them, they range from fair to nasty, and are easily discernable from genuine Spam. The only one I have found that I really like is the Texas supermarket chain H-E-B's house brand. If you didn't know better, you would think it is the real thing, just packed in a differently-labeled can. And maybe it is the real thing, just under a different label. And it is about a dollar cheaper than Spam, or was the last time I bought any, which has been awhile. H-E-B usually does things right when it comes to their house brands.

This just in: How Spam became cool again

Foodies, fine-dining chefs embrace once-maligned canned meat

Hormel has sold a record amount of Spam for seven straight years, and 2022 is on pace for another such milestone. The conglomerate behind Skippy and Jennie-O turkey says it can't make Spam fast enough and is increasing production capacity.

Spam is a trending ingredient on TikTok and on the menu at fine-dining restaurants in coastal cities. In 2019, a limited-edition Spam pumpkin spice flavor sold out in minutes. (You can still buy it on Ebay, where it goes for up to $100 per can.)

What is behind this phenomenon? Why does this slab of cooked pork that has long been stigmatized as fake meat, linked to wartime rations and hilariously spoofed on Monty Python now have cachet with foodies?...

...More than 100,000 visitors stream into the Spam museum every year in Austin, Minnesota, with stories to tell about Spam and recipes to share, said Savile Lord, the manager of the museum in the brand's hometown..."

Was in CVS today and they had certain brands of EYE DROPS in a locked area. OK, what is so special about eye drops? Do you huff them, snort them, fill up a syringe and shoot up, boil and inhale? Inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe since states are deciding to defund the police and not lock anyone up anyone for less than first degree murder, it just seems natural to a lot of folks to steal it.

Baltimore is one of them. When I was born there in 1953, it was just a nice American city, with almost 1,000,000 citizens, where you could go anywhere in safety.

Now, Baltimore has about 580,000 residents, and is essentially in a state of anarchy. Criminals roam the streets and do whatever they feel like doing, with no fear of consequences. Politicians are clueless, the police are helpless, and law-abiding folks aren't safe anywhere.

The local news reported this evening that the city is on track to have 375 murders this year, and about 800 non-fatal shootings. Violent carjackings are the latest fashion among teenage criminals, and holdups and muggings don't even merit a mention on the news.

Those of us who moved out of the city years ago don't go back there now for anything. Tourism has dried up, there are no more conventions, and the vaunted Harborplace pavilions at the Inner Harbor are devoid of merchants.

From an academic standpoint, it's interesting to watch civilized society unravel and disintegrate...but it isn't much fun to live through it... :(

Beemer, I was born there in '43, and from about ten years old through high school, we thought nothing of taking a bus, streetcar or riding our bikes anywhere in town, and after moving away post college, I still liked to drive through the city to reminisce when visiting my folks.
Now when I go north to see family, I will not drive anywhere in the city. Houses and buildings my tradesmen ancestors built and lived in for more than a century are now rotting, roofless, burned out, boarded up or gone altogether for junk and weed strewn vacant lots, whole city blocks razed to the ground and abandoned. Looking at them on google earth makes me weep.
The tallest building in the attached pic is the once fine house where my ggg-grandfather, a factory owner, lived and died in the 1870's and '80's followed by his son my gg grandfather up until his death in 1909.
Charm City my eye - more like Crime City now.

I used to play with a Korean keyboardist that turned me onto a different side of Spam. He would spread Sriracha on Spam slices, sprinkle them with brown sugar and caramelize them in a hot pan until glazed and slightly crispy.

Between bread or atop Ramen were tasty ways to keep more gig money in my pocket.

But Rusty, Is there anything you'd find inedible provided you were given unlimited Sriracha? :D
