Electric vehicles...

In 1837, those 'in the know' believed the John Deere steel plow would poison the soil.

I see lots of arguments here that EV owners simply ignore while they keep driving, just as they've done for years. Things change.

You're confusing change by choice with change by government fiat.

One thing I see in this thread is a refusal to admit that most pickups are owned by people who will never tow or go off road. The Ford Lightning is absolutely aimed at those people. Do you get it now?

Currently they use a pickup around town when any sensible person would use a Honda Civic or Accord. But, they have to have a pickup "just in case", riding around at 17 mpg with gas at nearly $5/gallon (at least out here). Just leaves me shaking my head. Those people are all over getting them a Lightning like white on rice. Ford are sold out already

But what I buy should be my choice.
I can make that decision on my own. I don’t need some politician or faceless bureaucrat telling me what I “need “. Once upon a time such a thing would have been laughable and unthinkable for Americans, and would have been political suicide. Most Americans have houses bigger than they “need”. Should their owners be forced to donate or rent out the extra space to someone more needy? Let the promoters of that philosophy lead by example!

Those people who don’t like gas pickups tend to be the same people who don’t like AR-15’s.
I have some younger Progressive in-laws that think everybody should be driving little “ kiddie cars “ like they do, but when they move to another apartment or house they are not shy about asking me and my F-150 Crew Cab 4WD to help them out.

That’s about to come to an end, however . . . . .

It occurs to me trhat the pyschological impact of EVs has not been properly studied. Clearly just the notion of them sparks (Get it? 'Sparks'?) latent Oppositional Defiant Disorder in some adults. :)

EV’s pose serious risks to trained and especially untrained first responders.

this is very true.
Aside from spraying water at a few hundred volts worth of high current power, you have an element in the same class as sodium involved here. Lithium gets busy with water. very busy.
The motor and controller systems are extraordinary, but that energy storage portion is a problem. Enough of one that it may improve the past reputation of the Ford Pinto rather significantly.

The Challenger space shuttle was hydrogen powered too.

Despite being backed by our best and brightest, it didn't turn out so hot.

Pretty sure I am not ready to hand that over to dealership service
Yeah, because orbital launch science is a direct comparison to automotive fuel cell function, like the Honda Clarity's decade and a half safety record.

They won't have to. They'll just ban the production and sale of gasoline. In which case you will have a very nice planter for your driveway.

not necessarily ....
Holley EFI - Holley

Far less spendy than a new EV. it can be tuned to run any flammable liquid and be applied to everything since the Model T.
Methanol and Ethanol burn clean.
I see no shame in burning either.

Sigh.

NFPA UNVEILS ONLINE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SAFETY TRAINING FOR FIREFIGHTERS AND FIRST RESPONDERS
August 6, 2012

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the launch of its online electric vehicle safety training course for first responders. The online curriculum is based on the classroom-style sessions currently being delivered across the country. The online version, which allows students to participate regardless of their location, aims to ensure that members of the fire service and other first responder communities have access to this important training.

The self-paced program provides first responders with the knowledge they need to safely handle emergency situations involving EVs, HEVs, PHEVs, and charging stations. The online curriculum includes information about the newest technology and safety systems found in the growing number of hybrid and electric vehicles on the road.

sandbagged record Im sure ...
You ever work with Hydrogen?
Once you use any fitting with it, you cannot use it for anything else because it permeates practically everything.
They are going to LOVE that when trying to recycle the things.
I like the idea up to transport, transfer and storage.
what we need is something liquid.

I liked America better when the consumers got to choose the products that best served them.

Well, that started South the first time that seatbelts were mandated and went way South with the first emissions control equipment. Remember all the wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding the withdrawal of leaded fuel? All engines would be toast before 50k miles.

Government interest in what we drive is hardly new, you've only got to live in this state and see what we pay for registration to know that. :( We are just going through another cycle where it's in our faces.
