457

What’s the good, the bad and ugly on these?

Those are all the things that make the 457’s, (908’s and CS’s,) great. They are generally less expensive do to the “short cuts” in manufacturing made but they are still a high quality/accurate and reliable pistol. (Just my opinion.) The angled dust cover is kinda like the 3913LS’s and NL’s. I think that’s a plus. The slides are a bit chunky but not that much. (You could always send it “guzzitaco” for a makeover.) The decocker is left side only which for some is important.

A few parts are plastic but I’ve never had any failures with any of my Value Line’s. I probably didn’t have to stock up on replacement parts but I did and they’re still available.

I didn’t need the 908 I got but it was in really nice shape and $299.00. I needed my 457S. I’d have no issues paying $100.00 more for another 457.

I would buy it at that price.
Mine was considerably higher in price but well worth it in my opinion.

The only "negatives" I can think of on the 457 are the plastic sights and blackened finish are not very durable, and the carbon steel slide can be rust prone during the "sweaty" times of the year.

Other than those, it's a great 45 compact at a great price.

I'd buy at that price.

guzzitaco can give those guns a nice blue/black finish that is more durable than the "Sharpie" black that it left the family with.

He can also recut the rear dovetail to accommodate a metal 3rd Gen sight.

You can PM him to discuss that.

Even if you don't to put more into it than what you paid for it, it's an accurate reliable all metal .45ACP at a great price.

I paid $350 for a 457 almost 20 years ago so that is an excellent price. Sadly, my old law partner talked me out of it (a very long story) but, since I had and still have a CS-45 I haven't thought about it too much except when you folks here remind me! ;)

IIRC, the rear sight dovetail is the same for the metal or plastic sight but the front dovetail is limited to the OEM and Trijicon.

John

You are likely correct. I mixed up my dovetails. What guzzi did was cut a "U" notch in the metal sight for a better sight picture.

He put a new plastic sight in the front without recutting the slide.

Those cheap plastic sights are a PITA to install for some reason. He has some secret method. :D

My two tone 457 is a shooter, reliable, and accurate. The 457 had an oddball front sight dovetail cut, which made it more difficult to find a replacement. If all a person can afford is the budget series, by all means buy one and don't look back. That said, If I had to do it over, would go with the 4513. The LGS has a number of these and would snag one in a heart beat if not for retiring my 3rd gens a while ago.

Wait, WHAT?!?!
An LGS with a "number" of 4513s??? And you haven't shared said LGS???
Come on! Please?

Picked it up last Friday. As a bonus it came with two mags. Took it to the range last night. Amazingly accurate. Stunningly so for a compact value line piece.

The only .45ACP pistols I own are 457s. They impress me with their accuracy as "Value Line" pistols.

I brought one of my 457s to Texas on a hunting trip several years ago. I let a friend who owns some expensive 1911s, including one Ed Brown shoot it.

He was impressed with the accuracy for an out of the box pistol and compared it quite favorably to his 1911s.

Another friend on that trip shot it and offered to buy it on the spot.

I just recently got one off of GB. Love it. I'm having mag issues, however. It came with what I believe is a non-SW magazine. 7 round, orange follower, works fine. I bought two new Pro-Mag magazines and they won't function most of the time. I've purchased a factory mag off of a site that shall remain nameless and I'm hoping this one will at least give me a reliable second magazine.

Has anyone else had any finicky magazine issues?
