Years ago my group of elk hunting buddies and I always took turns cooking, one day each (breakfast, sack lunch, supper). Naturally, we all tried to top each other with our culinary skills.

It came to Bob's day to cook, great breakfast of biscuits, sausage gravy, fried eggs, and a hefty lunch sack to carry along for the day.

At mid-morning Mr. Black Bear made his presence known by circling my position, working his way closer and closer as he repeatedly sniffed the air loudly. I tried talking to the bear, I tried yelling, I tried whistling loudly, I tried standing up and waving my arms, all the time with a .30-06 handy just in case.

Mr. Bear finally wandered off. I dug into my day pack, calmed myself with a cup of coffee and opened my lunch sack. Liverwurst, sharp cheddar cheese, onion, brown mustard on dark rye bread.

Sandwiches worth fighting wild bears over!

Yeah, or some might say "a sandwich smelly enough to be bear bait!"

JUST KIDDING! I've never had liverwurst but I understand it is a lot like braunschweiger - which I like A LOT! We used to eat it with onions and Miracle Whip, but combining it with sharp cheddar on rye also sounds pretty good.

Many times here I have stated that Ruthie's all-time favorite sandwich is Braunschweiger, Vidalia onion, brown mustard on marbled rye. I will accompany her with block Limburger, Vidalia onion, brown mustard on marbled rye (I've been known to sneak an anchovy or two in there).

The only two reasons I venture into Baltimore these days are named DiPasquale's and Attman's...

In 1914, Italian immigrant Joseph DiPasquale opened his grocery store in the far eastern side of the city. A year later, Russian immigrant Harry Attman opened a kosher market and deli on Lombard Street just east of downtown. Today, the grandsons of those men operate the family businesses.

DiPasquale's 'Real Italian' cold cut sub is just wonderful...and if I were ever condemned to death, my last meal would be an Attman's corned beef sandwich... :)

Love a good Reuben, but it's hard to beat a good Bahn Mi.

I always look forward to being able to pull the turkey meat right off the bones after Thanksgiving and Christmas. To me nothing beats pulled turkey on toasted whole wheat bread with mayo.

When I go to the American Legion in Frederick, MD I usually order their Rachel sandwich. It has all the fixings of a Reuben but with turkey instead of corned beef.

Many coffee shops and bakeries in Germany offer a very popular breakfast sandwich: sliced tomato, mozzarella cheese, and lettuce on a hard roll, with a smear of pesto...goes great with a cup of coffee! :)

As far as what I make at home, I like thick-sliced rotisserie chicken with mayo and a slice of smokehouse cheddar on 12-grain bread. Second favorite: good ole' egg salad on toasted wheat. I like to keep things simple.

I think Clara Peller just rolled over in her grave. :D
