I find this mildly annoying, especially for people who are posting For Sale or WTB items. This simple bit of information is useful in determining if it a state that has extra requirements for a transaction, distance to you which can effect shipping price, the off chance that they may be nearby since who wouldn't want to inspect a potential purchase directly? The information comes out eventually in communication back and forth, knowing it up front is more efficient so either party does not waste time on back and forth only to find out it is not an area they wish to buy from / sell to. Just my $0.02…

The weather

I find it a bit frustrating, as well as amounting to useless information, when a forum member comments on the weather and does not have any info about where they're located and make no reference to it in the post. Or inform us that ammo, or something, is in short/long supply in "their (unknown) area."

So we know it's snowing like crazy - somewhere. And we're running short of something - somewhere.

I think at least listing a home state would be informative.

Somebody will post 'Ain't seen one of them for sale since JC was a Corporal.'
No Show Joe will post, 'Up around here I see them for sale all the time.'
' usually see several at every Gunshow,'
'Last weekend saw one at the Flea Market.'

I don't care what where you are in classified listing.

That isn't the reason it annoys me when folks don't list their whereabouts. Frequently, I read posts that need that information to fully understand the context of a comment.

People make reference to the weather, hunting or fishing seasons, or attitudes about firearms that are location specific. I read about folks killing 10+ deer in a session or using bait (feeders or plots planted to feed the deer and bait them to a location): things that are forbidden here in Colorado.

It helps me appreciate the post to know generally where the author is located. I don't want your address. I'm not trying to locate you. I just want to understand the context of your comments.

One word - Paranoia!

I would like to hear a really good answer for not posting your location by state at minimum. The same thing happens with serial numbers. Who in the heck would take your serial number and do anything with it? Maybe because the gun might have been stolen would be my only answer, but that makes no sense either since I would not want to have a stolen gun in my collection.

Lastly, there are many SWCA members who do not share their location either?? I have a roster with well over 1000 members with email, phone, address in it, but they will not post where they live on the Forum. Many replies and posts on this Forum are specific to a state or location. In addition to items/guns for sale section, the General Forum and 2nd Amendment sections are often state specific, but people who post there often do not give their location either.

I think it would be interesting for someone to provide just one instance where posting location or serial numbers that resulted in a personal tragedy?

Yes, that is most annoying for me...There are times when I might be able to add my input on a member's question concerning a particular gun, but won't because the serial number posted is full of x's...I sometimes imagine my response if someone messaged me claiming that a gun I own was stolen from him, and I better return it to him or else...My reply would be, "Fine, have the detective assigned to the theft case come by the house and talk to me...Until then it's my gun"......Ben

I could wear out my LIKE button on the responses to the OP. References to weather , prices etc. Are worthless w/o some sort of geo. reference. Another type of post is incomplete descriptions of a item for sale. Ie- 1911 holster..Color, RH-LH, leather, kydex, IWB,OWB ? Then bump it to the top six times cause it's not selling. Then again I have a low threshold for simpletons.

"And exactly how long have you been in this game?" is kind of what comes to mind. It kind of baffles me why anyone would want to post a city/state, but, that's just me. Any serious buyers/sellers would understand and do business through PM's or email...

For me, a regional identifier is nice. Lots of folks have given good reasons. I think it puts a bit of a face on nameless posters. It helps foster the community feeling. I've found common interests with "quasi-neighbors" that way.

In my case, Puget Sound places me in Western Washington. Close enough, I figure. It roughly locates me without giving away details of the closest dinky town. If people don't know what or where Puget Sound is, I suppose they can resort to Google for a geography lesson.
