Why not list your city and state in profile?

Another one that cracks me up is when somebody posts a picture of some vehicle, and they block out the license plate number.

Fer cryin' out loud, you drive around in that thing all day long and people see the number anyway so...

Hey stop by and visit, bring a case of beer...just not Bud Light.

This is a firearms forum. Some people have perfectly legitimate reasons why they live in states like MA, NY, NJ, MD, CA, HI etc., but don't choose to expose this potentially embarrassing fact without an explanation, and perhaps don't care to explain themselves in public. Some people even **** *** ****** ***** as a hobby, and are not ashamed of it, but have enough couth not to discuss it publicly.

There could be other reasons.

I enjoy this forum despite of where most you live :)! No, really it doesn't matter to me whether you or do not post your location. That said, there are frequently posts where having a geographical point of reference adds meaning and enjoyment, for me, to the post. Plus, any true chance I had for anonymity was lost when I was issued a Social Security number. Oh man, I am sure there a lot of lists out there that I am already on and I am sure that they are easy to cross reference. I'm not paranoid, but luckily my dogs are.

'All my Ex's live in Texas
And Texas is the place I'd
dearly love to be'
But all my ex's live in Texas
And that's why I hang my
hat in Tennessee'

The way I figure is this . If someone really wants to hack this site to get my address , I'm more popular than I thought . Seriously , if someone really wants the info , there's probably a company out there selling it .

.........In my case, Puget Sound places me in Western Washington. Close enough, I figure. It roughly locates me without giving away details of the closest dinky town. If people don't know what or where Puget Sound is, I suppose they can resort to Google for a geography lesson.

I'll do it for them; it's the southern most waters of the Salish Sea.
Olympic to Port Townsend.
I have seen several instances where a member uses their ham radio call sign as part of their user name. I recon they know that is public information.
I am on a wood working forum that only uses real names for a user name. I guess that is different from gun forums.
If I am ever in the witness protection program, I will be more careful. But, I probably won't have any firearms!

73,
Rick

What? And have my first wife find out where I'm living these days?

On other forums and chat boards I have been stalked, threatened, and harassed by the best & worst so might as well be open about where I am.
Anyone can find me, stop and say Hello!

Add: Privacy does not exist in the world of the internet in the 21st century. Somebody, somewhere, can find you.

I think it would be interesting for someone to provide just one instance where posting location or serial numbers that resulted in a personal tragedy?

Suppose I cannot relay a "personal tragedy" but I've seen where a Gent shared his tale of getting a home visit from an ATF agent because of a serial number appearing in a picture on a gun forum.

He had done nothing whatsoever wrong, illegal, immoral or even of a foul odor. He still had a Federal agent on his door step.

I didn't care for the idea YEARS ago before we were all this aware of the rabid, spiraling corruption. I like the idea less today.

YMMV. Maybe not your personal tragedy but I'd rather you assess that from your front door.

I am in the camp of "why not". Most of the reasons given are pure paranoia! I have tried to find people quite a few times and even knowing their name and city haven't been able to find any information. Several were even related to me. You don't post your name in your profile, why do you think anyone could figure out who you are from just city, state and screen name?

Where it is particularly annoying is where someone posts a question about where he can buy parts or get repairs for his Model 14 or whatever and after several posters have given recommendations like S&W, Jack First, etc. and then the OP finally states something like "I can't do that because I am in Sweden, Italy, Australia........ That would certainly have been useful information up-front.

I understand your point, but I also see why members don't want to provide that much information on a public gun board for all the world to see.

Well, at least put the state. I was on this about 2 years ago. I love it when a guy asks if a price on a gun is reasonable, but nobody knows where you are at. Personally I pass bye those requests.

It is a small world, but big enough to pretty much have security in a state name I think
