Cows Loving It!

Got the cows moved into the new pasture and they are loving it. They still had plenty of grass where they were, but I guess like people, they like a change. This grass is mostly hybrid Bermuda, Bahia, and various native grasses. I wanted to get them on it while it is still high quality and not declining. I’m going to post in the comments the results of yesterday’s auction at a South Georgia sale barn. You will see why I want to pack on as many pounds of beef as possible on those calves. The hazy look is supposedly from Canadian fires. The donkeys are guardian animals, keeping coyotes and stray dogs away. The white cattle egrets sit on the cow’s backs and eat flies and ticks. Cows, calves, bull, and donkeys, there are about 35 animals grazing.

A 550 pound steer in Fitzgerald Georgia yesterday brought over $1100. The calf below, pictured from a couple weeks ago, will weigh around 500 pounds.

I've always wondered what is the difference between "steer" and "bull". I finally figured it out.

Steer is how you get the car to go where you want it to go. Bull is what you tell people after you get there.

Back when I was a kid I helped my grand dad make many bulls into steers.

Not sure how they do it today, but we banded them. Momma cow never bothered us but had he head right between us most times.

Watch donkeys are fairly widely used in Texas, mainly by sheep and goat ranchers, and prized for that purpose. And they are effective against predators. They will stomp them into mush.

I once worked in a part of Texas that was heavily populated by sheep and goat ranches, the area between Del Rio and San Angelo. I saw lots of donkeys. About the only livestock that will thrive there is sheep. Meat goats are a fairly big deal in Texas. There a lot more Muslims living in Texas than you might think. And they all eat goat meat. There are numerous Halal meat markets here in a San Antonio.

I miss my farm days, I grew up around pure bred black Angus cattle and as the youngest child looked after the farm when my parents became snow birds when Dad retired from his real job in 92. I lived on the Farm from 77 until 2000. The saddest day was calling the cows for the last time when they would all be loaded and taken off to other owners. They were good times, great memories

Meat goats are a fairly big deal in Texas. There a lot more Muslims living in Texas than you might think. And they all eat goat meat. There are numerous Halal meat markets here in a San Antonio.

The Halal Market I drive by has Mutton, Camel and Goat. The sheep and goat are fresh and can be ordered whole for parties. The Samolis I talked to at work were very disappointed that the Camel was frozen!

When I was a kid, gramps had Holstiens for milking and Angus for eating. Gramps only like hamburgers and meatloaf! He would have the whole steer ground up! Dad started buying a steer, and would do grams the favor of trading ground beef for stakes and roasts. About the time I turned 10 gramps decided a roast with onions, carrots and potatoes would be OK for a winter meal.

I don’t know if the local halal markets sell camel meat, if so it is probably imported from places that have a lot more camels than Texas. I spent some time working in the Persian Gulf area, and I did see camel meat in the souks there. Never tempted to try it. Here in San Antonio there is an area near the medical center where many Muslims live. You see lots of Muslim women in the streets, hard to miss them, there are quite a few Muslim-style restaurants located there also. Have never been tempted to try them either. My personal list of things not to eat includes lamb and veal. I did try cabrito (young goat) once, didn’t like it. Very popular in Mexico.

I think halal slaughter is somewhat like kosher, ceremonial and usually by slitting the animal’s throat with a special knife.

momma cows.
