45 Auto Rim primer installation

Well a lot of people are missing out on the fact that Roofuss is using a RCBS "UNIVERSAL" hand primer. It does not take shell holders, just has a spring to hold the cartridge in place.

The Original Poster is missing the fact that the "UNIVERSAL" hand primer will not work on the 45AR.

The fix will be to get the original style of hand primer RCBS makes that takes shell holders. :)

Ed

Finally a reply that makes sense, and hopefully helps ...thank you !! I knew the hand primer would not work, but wanted to see if anyone had the problem previously and if so, what was the solution...I will wait to see what RCBS has to say, and go from there .

Could you prime the 45 AR's on your reloading press .
My Pacific Super Deluxe and even the little Lee Hand Press have priming attachments that allow on press priming with the snap in shell holder used for reloading .
Maybe not the best solution but you could get the cases primed untill the RCBS hand priming tool gets worked out .
I use the Lee Hand Press and the Ram-Prime Unit that came with it as my hand priming tool all the time ... just add a shell holder and you is in business !

I use an older RCBS rock crusher press...and it works fine, has for many years. It has NO provision for primer installation. When , and if, I receive a reply from RCBS, I will ask them if there is some type of attachment or option that I could use on my press. Presently I have not been able to install AR primers, or any other caliber primers on my press. I have used the hand held primer tool for tens of thousands of rounds without issue... this is a first .
I might have to go with another method, OR, may just say the hell with it, sell the AR brass, and stick with just .45 ACP .
The auto rim brass advantage of not needing moon clips looks to be more of a PITA than its worth !!!

Have never had a problem using Lee/RCBS shell holders. Have loaded lots of .45 Auto Rim over the years. Just used some in my Colt New Service.

You should be able to use the Rock Chucker with RCBS primer tubes. Might be a good solution.

I bought into the 45AR brass thing shortly after buying my 25-2. Then a dear friend of mine showed me his using moon clips at a IDPA shoot....nothing faster than a moonclip into or out of the gun.

Haven't used my AR casings in 20 years.

This is not the solution to the OP problem to the primer seating situation but just in case you are shooting a 1917 smith and Wesson you don’t need ar brass or moon clips, the cylinder has a shoulder for the case mouth of regular 45 acp brass.

I did take a typing class in adult education after I graduated high school. I majored in Electronics shop in my junior and senior years in high school.

Apparently my typing class didn't pay off as I am still a very unusual typist. Fast yes, accurate no.

Spray and pray keyboard:D

To the OP ... you'd do well to get yourself another priming tool or two.

The RCBS universal hand priming tool works perfectly. I love it. Never had a problem getting primers to seat perfectly in rifle or pistol cartridges. However 45 Auto Rim is a different beast.
This is what I use for those:
RCBS Ram Priming Unit
You'll need this shell holder:
RCBS Shellholder #8 (45 Auto Rim)
There is no primer feed tube. You have to insert the primers one at a time by hand.

I have used single station press priming tools, Lee Hand Priming Tool, Dillon Progressive Priming and a RCBS Bench Mounted Priming Tool. Of all of them this is what I use: RCBS Automatic Bench Priming Tool in fact have three of them. An old one that only accepts one primer at a time and two like the one in the link. Bought the second one because the price was to good to pass up.

My RCBS Universal primes Starline 45 AutoRim with no problems...

I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones...?

Cheers!

Yes it is !! Thank you for the info !

I’ve had those same thoughts a few times:). Since I already made the investment, I’ll stick with it for a while. One advantage is that the AR cases are stronger in the web area and you can load them a bit hotter. I’ve loaded some up to near .45 Super levels with no problems. I only shoot those in my 625, not the 1917’s. Another advantage for me is that my kids, especially my daughters, like shooting the AR rounds over the moon clipped rounds. It’s more like loading the .38’s and .32’s, thus more familiar to them.

Here’s a pic of my oldest daughter firing my 625

Many people have decided it's not worth the hassle, myself included. I just use 45 ACP brass and moon clips. The 45 Auto Rim brass sits in a lonely bin in a dark drawer somewhere in the shop.

LOL!! Yep, so far all I have invested is 200 rounds of new Starline auto rim brass. Depending on what RCBS says...I may just say the hell with it, and sell the brass. Can't see getting in too deep for the sake of loading one cartridge type, since I could just use the ACP brass instead. The hand held priming tool works great, on everything I load for, with this one exception.

My brass may end up the same way, lol !!

To be truthfully honest, I do not load Auto Rim anymore. I loaded it when I had a S&W M1917. When I sold the revolver, I sold the Auto Rim brass with it. When I bought my 625, I was using moon clips. They were a PIA, I thought at the time. Then I was gifted a moon clip loading/demooner tool for a board member. Have never looked back. A friend still does load Auto Rim, and I tried them in the 625 last Friday. Will stick with the moon clips.

I read the instructions. NO Shell holder. These jaws need to be installed correctly.

Other then that, not much help.

Someone seems to have a complaint about every hand priming tool made. I tried many over many years and none were perfect. I bought a 21st Century tool six or eight years ago and it's as close as I've come to finding the ideal tool. It's one-at-a-time priming, but that doesn't make it nearly as slow as I had anticipated. It's made of good machined materials and should outlast everything else on the market, except maybe the Sinclair, which is similar.
