At a recent show ....... I asked him what caliber ... and he then just handed it to me. I knew it was more than I wanted to spend (right THEN) when I saw what it was --- YIKES !! I did not make note of the serial # while I held it in my hand :( It was a 5 screw 44 mag with pristine "cokes" and 6 1/2" bbl.

I am asking for a reality check on the price range one might expect for one of these as described (gun only)

I was 10 when these first came out. I distinctly remember seeing two side by side (in their presentation cases) in the glass case as I walked into my local sporting goods store. I thought they were the most beautiful/interesting handguns I had ever seen. I was a two gun dual holster rig cap gun aficionado ... I knew my "stuff" :). I sort of vowed I would have one when I grew up. I have had model 29s and 629s but never THAT first love model 5 screw with cokes ...... If I get another chance with that one I just might "pull the trigger" ...... The pricing conversation was a bit "fuzzy" ...hence my query here.

Without the case, papers, or tools (gun only), I'd say low end of $2500.
Good luck, they only seem to be going up in price.

At your quoted price point I'd say you are shy about 4 maybe 5 hundred.

If the condition is as described.

No, really.

I have one at about 90%, no case.
The first one I actually saw in person was up in Ft. Collins.
'Is that Black case factory?'
I had seen many articles about it, but no mention of that case.

A similar one with a correct case (no tools) just sold online for $3150, a good deal I think. Plus a face-to-face deal avoids shipping and sales tax. Good luck in your decision.

I don't used the % system because it it way too subjective, but that is a different discussion. I have S130881 that I consider a very high shooter grade with non-pristine dark rosewood cokes, factory letter, period. I have had it in my case for $3800 lately. Most people around here don't know what it is, let alone the significance of such a low serial number. I'm in no hurry to let it go. In fact, I'll probably give it to my son when he comes to visit in a couple weeks, if he wants it.

Bigmtnman, I might get a little fuzzy in a sale price conversation as well. The one you looked at sounds like it is in much better condition than mine, and how often do you encounter an example like that in person (not on the INTERNET)?

They haven't made them for quite a while, and they don't grow on trees. Good luck in you negotiations.

My mistake. I just checked the price tag. $3500

Daddy, Daddy, I'll be in Hot-lanta this weekend!!! :D

Another thing that I will add is that not all S&W 5 screw .44 magnums were made in the first year, but the ones that letter to 1956 sell for a decent premium. Unfortunately, you can't tell just by the serial number.

While S130881 is a lower SN than the first production 44 Mag shipped (S130947, I believe), it didn't leave the factory until June 18, 1956. Rather typical of S&W.

Well, the only thing I can offer is that I bought a Pre mod 29 5 screw 1956 and a 1957 4 screw in factory black case with tools.

I bought both of them in the last 12 months. They both appear in unfired mint condition except the 5 screw has a tiny tiny 1/16th of a inch scratch above the trigger guard. Can't imagine how it happened. You probably would not notice it.

Paid $4200.00 each. So deduct the original case and tools and there you have a recent sale price in the last year.

Both were purchased on Gunbroker and look like they were handed off by the gunsmith at the factory.
