You realize that Guns and Ammo and Shooting Times are joined at the waist. At my house both normally come in the same delivery day. It probably would be postage cheaper if they just combined the both and only had one mailing.

I still have some of the old newspaper format of the original S.T.s
With that said I now have a renewal notice on my desk. This year going to do something different, going to run the notice through the shredder.
In the '60s, GUNS & AMMO was the best. SHOOTING TIMES wasn't far behind. I haven't looked at either in years, but I'll bet they remain near the bottom of the heap. A step above YouTube, but only because the articles are professionally edited.

Before I moved I had the AR from 1946-2019. Tried to sell them then give them away, no takers so in the trash about 100 a week. Kind of wish had kept some.
Years ago knew the firearms guy that also had the tv show, those were the days…

My knowledge about guns and shooting gear has grown over the decades. That said, I still get Guns & Ammo. I think that it is still entertaining and informative. American Handgunner is less so and their dumbing down of tests has made me waiver about resubscribing. TAR has really taken a tumble since the state of New York and others have attacked the NRA.

I haven't seen a copy of AMERICAN HANDGUNNER or GUNS in at least five or six years. They may have deteriorated in recent years to the point where they are secondary magazines like most of the rest, but that's speculation only, I don't it for sure. They used to have (and may still have) one of the best editors in the business, Roy Huntington.

I get really amused when the gun rags test 6 shot revolvers with 5 shot strings!! I just don't understand that way of thinking!! I'm ok with a 5 shot target from an auto, just think it does not count unless all 6 chambers are included in a revolver! Is it just me??
My very first revolver was a 7 shot.

I always go with 5 shot strings for accuracy or chronograph testing, whether on a 5, 6, or 7 shot revolver or semi-auto.

Rosewood

Only problem with that is you don't know about those other chambers & if they are lined up as precisely as the other 5, if you don't shoot them all. You could have one slightly misaligned, potentially giving you a flyer.

Back in the day I had subscriptions to Shooting Times, Combat Handguns and Guns and Ammo.

These days it is Guns of the Old West and Handloader.

I used to be an NRA member too but let that lapse when the magazine went south.

The NRA isn't about the magazine, it is about fighting for our rights.

Please renew your membership & skip TAR.

They are all tested and one time or another.

Yes. Flyers count for group size. That's why you shoot multiple groups with the cylinder full if you want a real accuracy assessment. Groups fired at less than twenty-five yards are meaningless.

Alas, none of the mags are what I grew up with.
I read G&A, Shooting Times, Guns, The American Rifleman, Outdoor Life, and Field & Stream starting in the early 60s. The grand old gun and hunting writers were at the peaks of their careers. One could become truly educated reading them.

I urge you all to support the NRA. Even with the troubles they currently have, they are still the biggest dog we have in the fight. Become a voting member and help make the changes we need to see. If you have the time and ability, run for a seat on the Board of Directors!
I think we've covered this topic, so we're done here.
