I was lucky enough to come across two 3-inch Model 13's within days of each other a few years back....I bought both. One is a 13-3 and the other a 13-4. I have the original stocks but I love the feel & look of the Ahrends on them. Don
I did. Lucked into a 3 inch barrel for cheap (shipping was more than the cost) and I had/have a bunch of parts including a rusted trigger and hammer. I don't have all the tools of a gunsmith but got it done. The trigger is smoothed and rounded, something I always did back in the day.
I was going to round the grip frame but liked it enough to keep it as is.
There's a refinished 3" -2 p & r floating around out there wearing Spegel grips at a high price to me at least considering the refinish, $1525. No mention of who did the refinish. As an uneducated guess I'd say that money should be for a nib version but what the heck do I know??
The Model 13 was my last issued revolver. It was the best shooting and carrying revolver we had. It has our agency seal roll marked on the side plate and was ordered with the round butt target grips.
Well, I searched high and low for quite some time for the 3" M13. The one on the right came first from a consignment at a LGS, a transition 13-2. The other was sold as a FBI gun, 13-3, got that from Armslist. The RH holster, a Bucheimer Concealer and bullet pouch were won on GB from a retired FBI Agent. DEF3, I wish you good luck in your search for that elusive 3" M13.
I picked up a nickel 4inch 13-1 several years ago for under $400 and my bid the only one. Still boggles my mind that I was the only bidder. Even came with a older Tyler-T.
I'm looking at a nickel 3" owned by a buddy of mine who is selling off some of his collection. Same guy I got the 3" 547 from. Recessed but not pinned. Hopefully he doesn't take me to the cleaners on it.
I have a 13-2 pinned and recessed. It has a 3" but with a square butt which means the barrel was changed. This was great because it fits my hand with a pair of Herretts. Looks just like gunsnrovers picture with a short barrel. Hope to find another.
I too believed that the 13s were unicorns because they were so difficult to find. I even enlisted the help of the owner of one of my local gun stores to please alert me if he ever got one for sale -- but after some time and no sightings of the unicorn, I pretty much resigned myself to the possibility of never finding one at a reasonable price. I should have added, they can be found if you're willing to pay pretty high prices. The situation became so dire (just kidding) that I ended up buying a 3" 64-3 as a "placeholder" to tide me over till I might one day find a 3" 13. I might add that the 64-3 is basically the same revolver only chambered in 38 Special---it has the same super cool heavy barrel with that classy matte finish along the top. You might want to keep the 64-3 as a possibility if you're willing to be limited to 38 Special.
As luck would have it, a mere week after buying the 64 a blue model 13-3 came up and I grabbed it--absolutely gorgeous revolver. And are you ready for the irony of life --five days after my purchase of the blue 13 a nickel one comes to market (my dealer friend called saying he had just come across on, and was I still interested---I couldn't refuse.
So main ideas: 1) don't give up they are out there, 2) they are pretty spectacular and 3) also consider the 64. Good luck on your hunt.
The 3” 13 is a cool piece! Probably the only Smith I don’t fret over finding a P&R example, but it has to be a 3”. I still have one of the two 13-3s I’ve owned. I happily traded one to a buddy for his LNIB 3” 625-3, only a few hours after acquiring it at a show; the 625 only had 12 rounds through it.
The 13 three inch has eluded me. I have a nice 13-3 four inch though. I do have 64 and 65 three inch revolvers that i think is the perfect balance for shooting.
I am a sucker for blued guns and for me a 3” 13 is the grail. I might be satiated with a stainless ( yuck) 64 or 65 which seem marginally more common. It amazes me S&W hasn’t a clue how popular these 3” K’s are, or why on earth are they not making them!?
