I switched to Ford today

Ha I recall the old Maverick. After a while the maverick was offered with a 302. I remember an ad for a maverick pulling into a group of muscle cars and someone yelled "Maverick" Funny Ford would bring back the name
 
Some of the same elements that put me into a Subaru.
I drove a Fox body mustang for so long that when it finally came time to look for a replacement vehicle, Ford didn't offer any cars other than the Focus and Mustang. I didn't want a truck, or full size SUV, so they self eliminated from consideration.
Part of me still wants a mustang, but I no longer live on a property that directly supports my interests, so I have to load those interests into the back of a vehicle to transport them to areas that do.
The pony just wont do this.
 
That Maverick up above must be brand new. There's no rust around the wheel wells! I think the last Ford I bought was a 2001 Taurus. Car had everything but a glass roof, but 13 times back to the dealer in 12 months soured me on Ford, but this one time I'll give Ford a chance again. The price was pretty good, the power is excellent for a 4 cylinder, and if I ever do need to haul anything small I can...if wife will let me use it.

In the demographic identified by their marketing, probably not.

What's in a name? People in the US seem to have an unusual sensitivity to it when it comes to cars. They will rant on a new car using an old name declaring it a nail having never been near one, despite the new vehicle being an entirely different layout (FWD vs RWD) with 30-40 years advancement in engines and transmissions. I don't get it.

We're getting better Steve, It only took me about 5 years to get over S&W using the M&P name on its current product. :)
 
I was in the middle of the 1960s drag scene with my 1963 Impala SS 409. I routinely turned the quarter mile in the mid 13s. The only horse race I had was with Dodge & Plymouth 426HP Hemis. What I do not understand is why Ford would bring back a name of a model with a less than positive reputation?? Maybe they thought there was no one around the remembers the original Mavericks?

Let see how much intestinal fortitude they really have. Bring back the Edsel. The night comedians on the late show will have material for years and the Ford salesmen will play a lot more games of Solitaire!
 
Sounds like....

Back in the 60s in the muscle car street racing days the traffic council put out a bunch of adds about the subject speed kills. We use to add to that thought by saying "Speed kills, be safe buy a Ford''.

Sounds like my '63 Galaxie with zero extras (no power steering/brakes or AC or radio. It DID have a heater and the essential cigarette lighter) the 223 mileage maker engine. It was slow off the line and even slower accelerating up to 60. You could alleviate that somewhat by winding the hell out of the lower gears. It weighed more than a ton and a half.

At least my 64 Galaxie had the 289, a great little motor
 
My first car was a Ford.
1963 Falcon Station Wagon.
Had the 170 Special with a 3 on the tree.
Starter didn't work so had to push start it.
Shifter lever broke so JB welded a big yellow handled screw driver in to it.
Life and times of a broke GI private.
 
I'm not a Ford guy but I started making plans to retire when they quit building the Crown Vic's. Not the fastest but the most reliable and predictably handling patrol cars I've ever driven.

As far as power, Ford knows how to build a fast car. I worked at a couple Ford dealerships when I was in HS (early '70's) and those Mustangs, Torinos, Thunderbirds, Cyclones, et al were fast...

My Department had a handful of Interceptor Vic's in the late nineties that had the 5.4 liter motor. They were special ordered for certain brass.

As far as I know, you won't see that motor option listed anywhere for a Vic Interceptor.

My boss had one and we clocked it at 160 mph.

I have more bad experiences than good....

..with cars in General. Bought a Mercury Bobcat (Pinto). Ok car but CRUDE attempt at dealing with the gas prices. You HAD to turn the sparks down because all it would do was knock. Then I bought a Mercury Topaz (Concord). The thing ate tires for breakfast and about put us in the poorhouse. I finally found a somewhat solution in buying nothing but ribbed tires because they had enough support that it wouldn't go out of line every few days.

Bought a Chrysler Concorde. Nice car but the transmission blew up as soon as the warranty was out. Had to take out a loan to get it rebuilt. Blew up again and I got rid of it.

Mitsubishi Montero- good car for my wife to deliver mail in. Lasted pretty good but something went wrong with the cooling system and warped the head. Got the head shaved but whatever was the problem with the cooling didn't get fixed and it happened again. Got rid of it.

Big Buick Regal I got used. One of the best cars we had.

Dodge Caravans - I've had two of them. First one got run into and totaled, the second we have now. If it goes I hope we can find another one.

Never heard of a 5.4L CVPI. Doesn't the 5.4L have a higher deck height? I'm surprised they could fit it under the hood. I sure would have liked to have one though...

I believe you're right, the more I read about it. Doesn't seem possible that it would fit. I was going from my rusty memory and assumption and what I was told.

I'm wondering if they were chipped/tuned (Hypertech?) before delivery as his motor even sounded more throaty. It was much stronger on the top end.

I remember when he got it. He tossed me the keys and told me to fill-it-up and take the long way back. Wink, wink. "You ain't gonna believe this thing!"

Ford had quite a run of econo-boxes. My first car was their early compact car attempts, a 1962 Ford Fairlane 500. With its 101HP six cylinder, it could reach mind bending speeds of up to 72 MPH on lever ground. I had always thought that if I had a brick, it could be used for cruise control on the expressway!! Equipped with a 3 speed on the column. In winter, I would start the car in the driveway to warm up. One morning I went out to get in the car and it was gone!! Found it against a tree, as it just dropped into gear and drove away by itself. Good news was that the bumper steel was so strong, it did not even dent. Picture shows that I thought the car looked better without the hubcaps.

Congrats on the new ride. Even as a Chevy fan I can admit that the Mavs are wildly popular, and based on what I saw when buying my recent truck very reasonably priced. It was not on my radar because we own a travel trailer and need something for serious towing, but I can appreciate that the Mav does what it does very well.

Hope you get good, long service from it.
