I recently picked up a 15-2 on GB as an addition to my combat family. Now…15, 18 and 19.

The seller calls me today and says he is about to ship and just noticed the serial number on the box does not match the gun. It’s close, but the last three numbers are different. It’s from an estate so he can’t ask the previous owner and there’s only one 15-2 in the collection.

He’s thinking when the gun was bought new the wrong box was taken off the shelf and given with the gun at the store. H has no way of knowing for sure.

Seems plausible, and I don’t really care as I would have bought the gun without a box anyway. But, will this hurt the value at all?

Anything is possible. Unless it was the shelf model and got the box switched around at the retail end there would be no reason for that to happen. Assuming the gun is pristine and comes with accessories and paperwork and you are buying it as a safe queen, YES, it would hurt the resale value. As long as you are buying it as a shooter, not so much.

It’s definitely a shooter and it’ll be up to my kids, when I’m gone, to resell it, but I linked the auction. He did knock a little off the price before he ran my card. I’m happy with it, just more curious than anything.

Just a moment...

Seems unlikely that a shop would sell a new revolver and put it into the wrong box, but I guess anything is possible. Wrong box reduces collector value, but if this Model 15-2 has been shot by a previous owner, then it's not really a collector piece, but a shooter.

Nice package with the T-Grip regardless. I'd be happy with it as it is. Even if box got switched it is still not the original and can't be verified so it is a mismatch but I wouldn't worry about it.

In 1966 most shops had their inventory out in glass display cases,so the chances of a handgun leaving w/the wrong box are 50/50....if and how much it will affect pkg. value will depend on whom is buying&to a certain extent how long they've been lookin. In the case of your purchase condition would be difficult to improve on. Nice shooter!

Thanks, no worries…maybe I can reunite the box with its original gun. I’ve seen stranger things happen on here.

Switched box

Back in the late ‘70s there was a small Mom and Pop hardware store in our town that was closing. I bought a new High Standard Sentinel MK1 .22 revolver in brushed nickel. There were two identical revolvers in the display case and I was given the gun and factory box. A year or more later I noticed that the serial number on the box didn’t match the gun. The model, finish, and barrel length were correct. Too late to do anything about it but it was apparent that Mrs. Wilkins had simply given me the box for the other gun.

Not terribly likely given the target hammer and trigger, but if it was ever police department issue, and eventually traded in as part of a group of guns, it’s unlikely the boxes and guns in that group would match.

My understanding from the GB seller is the guy whose estate he is handling was the original owner. It was bought at a small shop in Juneau, that is now out of business. So, could be similar.

For $695 the price is right with no box. The box is an added extra - I would enjoy owning that Model 15 and not worry about it.

I suspect that was the little shop in the Mendenhall Valley, right by the airport. I used to stop in and visit with the owner occasionally, sometimes I'd buy ammo and bullets. It was a nifty little store. Too bad it's gone.

I’m not a huge fan of T-Grips, I have a pair of Altamonts I’ll throw on until I can find a pair of targets for it.

Picked it up today, very happy with the package. If anyone has K680653, I have your box.
