....a 1006! I live in California, and these things are not easy to find here. I can't just buy one off Gunbroker, basically have to find one already in California, and finally I did. I have been looking for years. Had a Wanted to Buy ad up on thjis site and posted this thread on the subject a couple years ago: 1006 vs Sig p220 10mm

Now, my 1006 won't impress many of you. There are lot of people that have more rare 10mm's, and have examples in better condition. But like the Marines (almost) say, "This is my pistol. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

OK, I know, pics or it didn't happen.

It has lots of small scratches, and kind of looks like someone threw it in their tool box and bounced it around for a few years. But I did a field strip and it looks fine inside and the crown is intact. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Couple questions for you guys:

1. At some point, I think I should get a bead blast done. I am really reluctant to polish it or really do anything to the finish - I don't want shiny. What do people think of the Smith and Wesson factory bead blast these days? I have seen mixed reviews about factory service generally, but this seems like the kind of thing to send it back to the mother ship for.

2. I think it has some new grips in its future. Like to hear what people have and what they think of them. This is going to be a range toy, not planning on carrying. I am leaning towards the KSD checkered walnut grips, because I like wood, they are a good price at $72, and they look pretty light in color for walnut. (I am going for the Miami Vice look with light wood and stainless.) Anyone have them? What do you think of them? Do they fit the gun right? Do I need to spend a bit more on Hogues? Athough my hands are not huge, I don't have a problem with pretty big grips. I really like a palm swell, or faiingthat a curved backstrap. I see Miday has factory plastic grips for $21.49, which would be a cosmetic and comfort improvement.

I have learned from previous purchases not to load up on accessories right away, so I am going to shoot this gun some first. It came with two magazines. Given their scarcity, I made an exception to my rule and bought two more mags from The Snail off a posting on this site. (He still has ome posted for anyone looking, great experience buyuing from him.)

Appreciate any guidance from the S&W 10mm veterans on here!

Any competent gunsmith should be able to do a simple glass beadblast on that. Note I said competent, not some idiot working out of the local gun shop who only knows how to bolt AR-15s together.

Great looking pistol! That feeling of finally getting the pistol you want is awesome. Great to see it

Being presently behind the lines, I appreciate your excitement.

I found a 1006 a few years back and scrounged a set of Hogue grips off EBay.

Not sure of the wood, looks nice.

One thing I've found with the Smith semi pistols is that rock solid grip fitment is a challenge. Maybe it's just my luck, but it seems to always require a bit of acraglass or epoxy somewhere inside to kill the back and forth wobble. Kind of a challenge considering the corners and cuts in the frame.

Sure looks nice, dsf! BTW you are escaping California for Oregon in 2024, I hope you're packed!

I'm going to escape Kaliforniastan one day, if I ever get to retire.

I think you should send it off to be re bead blasted. If for no other reason than if you ever misplace it, you can accurately ask: " Where is that blasted thing?!".

Yet another bad joke. I should be ashamed.

I have your gun's larger bore brother, the 4506. What a fabulous gun those last gen Smiths were. I put them in the same class as the first Model 29s, the old Pythons, the pre 64 Model 70s, etc.

I'm in favor of making it look factory fresh. Congrats! Nice find.

When I carried a 4506, the only after market grips available were the rubber Hogue grips. I used them for a while and eventually settled on the factory arched backstrap. Mine, as issued, had the straight backstrap. I don't know about any after market grips available now, but I would suggest trying the factory before changing. The Hogue grips were ok, but just felt a little too big. That was off set to an extent by the "grippy" rubber, but as I said I settled on a factory grip.
So, unless you are really set on wood or any non factory look, work with the original grips for awhile.
Enjoy your new 10mm, I always wanted one but now the prices are too rich for me.

Congratulations!! I had one when they first came out and stupidly sold it. Mine had the adjustable sight and I think yours looks better with the fixed rear. Looks "cleaner" to me. Terrific pistols for sure.

Excellent!

My 1006 was my first 3rd Gen.

So far I have not seen a "modern" 10 mm that really brings more to the table than a good 1006 or 1066. Definitely NOT any of the striker guns. It would be nice if the 10mm P220 had 9 round standard mags like the 10XX series.

Congratulations on a great find. Sometimes perseverance pays off!
Personally I'd have one of the smiths on this site refinish it. Won't help it shoot any better, but you'll have more pride of ownership. Haven't tried any of them personally, but they have good reps.
As for grips, I recently got a set of KSDs for my 4506-1. Mostly happy with them - nice wood, decent checkering. The KSDs fit OK, though they're about 2mm short on length, and I had to fiddle with where the mainspring retaining pin fits a little. I'd buy them again for the price. They seem to be a bit thinner than the Hogues I've handled. IMO, the factory grips would be a good purchase too, just to have. I had no complaints with mine, just wanted something different.
Hope you get to get out and try your new prize soon.

Thanks, guys, I do intend to shoot it before dropping any more cash on cosmetics.

Luckily, I have a pretty good stash of 10mm on hand (I have a Glock 20SF that may be looking for a new home soon!). I plan to reload for it. Brand new to reloading, but I have been accumulating equipment and supplies and have started saving brass in .40 and 10mm.

I sort of think of the 1006 as the gun my .40 cals dream about being when they grow up :o

Many thanks!

I may have to change that to 2025, as in early 2025. Got the house in Grants Pass about 10 years ago. If CA dropped off the continent I wouldn't have to pack much. Just decided to wait for the final SSN bump up to kick in late Feb 2025.

Failure to Extract

OK, I got a chance to shoot the 1006 last night. Put 50 rounds of SIg 80 grain FMJ though it. This is what I looked like :D:D:D. Gun ran flawlessly.....except......

One failure to eject, about 2 or three rounds into the second magazine. It seemed to make sense to look at the extractor, so I started there. Here is a picture:

IMG_2316.jpg

Looks OK to me. There is a small amount of wear in the inside top corner that doesn't really show up in the picture, but I don't think it is enough to cause a problem. Picture was taken after I cleaned the extractor. Before I cleaned it, there was a lot of gunk in the inside corner. If the build up was enought to keep the extractor from going all the qay into the groove on the rim to grab the empty, that could be the problem.

If a clean extractor doesn't fix it, what should I look at next? Appreciate any tips, hunches, leads or suggestions.

I would send the gun to Guzzi Taco or BMCM for a complete refurbish and trigger job. They will change out and replace all worn parts to include grips. Gun comes out looking factory new

Congrats, on the gun. Cleaning up any new to you used gun is always a great idea. When you say failure to eject are you meaning the casing stove piped or was somewhere outside the chamber. Or was it a failure to extract leaving the casing in the chamber. Eject/ could be lots of things, lube, grip, ammo. Extract/ could be dirty chamber, ammo, or extractor. Dont see anything on the extractor, chips etc. Without installing it and gauging it, hard to see if its that.
I would clean and lube everything, put the extractor back, install a new rebound spring and shoot a few boxes of good factory ammo, firm grip and see what happens. Before I invested a few more dollars. Good luck.

ReREAD you last entry, One fail to extract in the first 2 mags through the gun is not that exciting. If you are not used to shooting that powerful a semi auto its easy to lose you grip on 1 round. Why do you think the FBI got rid of them. Too much gun.
Like I said clean, lube ,new recoil spring and give it a bit of time to see if its a real issue.

When we started doing transition schools for people from 9mm to 45 acp ( S/W 645/4566/4506) lots of officers had failure to eject /extract. Clean, lube and teach them to grip a lot firmer than they had to with a 9mm Beretta over 2 days fixed almost all issues. Again good luck..

Congratulations. I am not much of a semi auto guy, I have way more revolvers, but when that gun was new in the late 80's, I lusted after one for a long time, just couldn't swing the $600 a new one cost. Never did get one, but I am happy you found yourself one.

Yes, I misspoke. I siad failure to eject but it was really failure to extract. If it was stove pipe, I would cop to limp wristing it. But I suspect a mechanical cause.

I did field strip the gun, cleaned and lubed it before firing, but that did not extend to the exptractor. I don't normally detail strip a gun when I buy it, maybe I should with one this old.

I will do new recoil spring. That is one of those cheap parts that gets expensive if you have to pay shipping on it, so will have to see what else I can combine it with.
