I won this one the other day.
48-4… but it says 22 mag on the barrel.
Consensus figured it was a model 53 barrel.
It has not arrived yet, but when it does, it will be interesting to see if the barrel was original with the gun.
If the barrel was replaced, then it means the shoulders would have had to be adjusted back in order for the 22 WMR to fit… that is unless they fitted a cylinder at the factory that was made as an extra 22 WMR cylinder for a 53. I heard that they did make a few of those..
when it comes through, I will compare it to the 53 cylinders that I have and see.
It'll be interesting to see the configuration.
I'm hoping it is a model 53 23 WMR cylinder but we will see.

Pretty neat !
Being a Combat Magnum fan always lamented why SW never offered a look alike in 22lr.
In order to set the forcing cone back enough to make up for the shorter cylinder Im guessing they also had to shorten the ejector rod at the rear by turning it down an equal amount ?
I have been sitting on a 4" Model 53 barrel with the thought of fitting it to a K22 one day but the shroud would slightly overhang the frame as evidenced in your pictures.
The other way to go would be to start with a full underlug Model 17-6 and either reshape the barrel or fit the 53 barrel as its frame is longer in the yoke cut like the Model 19 and 53 frames, of course the 53 barrel does not have a full width rib but tapers towards the muzzle , the 17-6 on the other hand has a full wide rib like the Model 19.

Looking at the length of the barrel shank I think it is a factory 22WMR cylinder

This is my model 18-4 with a 4" Jet barrel, 22rf and 22wmr cylinders

this is a factory 53

PS there is a way to do it without removing so much material from the rear shoulder on the barrel and to make the bottom of the shroud not over hang the frame. Simply machine some material off the face of the frame and yoke. There is absolutely mechanical or safety reason not to especially on rim fire frames

Very neat !
I kinda figured if someone tackled this kinda project already it would either be member Steelslaver or Nedroe!
For years held out hoping I might stumble on a 22lr cylinder from a Model 53 but no luck.
Looking at your Model 18 Im curious how the frame which is notched to mate to the narrower barrel rib fits with the wider 53 rib?
Im guessing it looks fine otherwise you would have started with a post 1955 un notched Model 17 frame?
