Gun guy here 69 years old., yes I know should have applied years ago like my wife and kids did. Question? I keep seeing ads on the gun channels that I can answerer 6 questions and get my permit. No classroom or shooting. All on line and I am preapproved because I live in Florida. Is this true? Or a scam?

Just do a little research in your home state. In just a few moments I learned that the process in Florida is very similar to my state of Mississippi. Get smart and make it legal; two best things you can do.

It is a scam. There is no need to do anything. The law in Florida now allows you to carry a concealed firearm WITHOUT A LICENSE, so long as you meet all of the requirements for getting a license.

That said, there are still a lot of good reasons to get the license. For one thing, you don't have to wait three days to take possession when you buy a handgun if you have the license. Also, for reciprocity with other states, you need to have the actual license. So, I advise you to get it.

BUT!!! The crap you are talking about on the internet is just that -- CRAP!

I think maybe they are getting you a permit in a State that allows non-resident permits and has a low-bar to entry. If that State recognizes Florida then, in theory, you are legal. The only problem is Florida Law. If Florida decides you're not actually a "Resident" of the issuing state, then Florida Law regarding requiring Florida Residents to have a Florida permit takes over. For me that's too cute by half. Get a permit from a state you are truly, legally, a resident of.

I've been getting those emails too. New Mexico requires a day of classroom and a morning of live fire. Oddly, the gun you qualify with is the largest caliber you can carry once you have your permit. Qualify with a 9 or .357 and you may not carry a .45 concealed.

Add a third “thing to do”: train like your life depends on it!

I am 71 and just got my CCW here in Ohio this year. Even though by law here I didn’t need it to carry, I got it for the simple fact it speeds up buying a gun from the 3 day waiting period - and possible delayed answer - to immediate.

And the best part for me was the classroom and shooting time - 100 rounds at various distances etc.
Loved it to be honest.

Back when Florida started the permit, if you had a DD214, no gun course was necessary. I think they assumed, that all Military vets, had any more gun time, after basic training.
With the permit, walk in, walk out, with the gun. 👍

Online certification for a hand gun carry permit is completely 100% legal in Tennessee. As long as you use the state recommended course. I though it was a scam also but it's legal. Pay the online course fee, print the certification after completion of course. Take it to local MVR office. Pay the state hand gun carry permit fee ($65) in Tennessee. Which covers TBI background check & fingerprinting and photo. The very steps I followed in getting my carry permit two years ago. And Tennessee is a permit less carry state also.

Scam. There are also ads for you getting a permit for “nation wide reciprocal ccw permits”. Doesn’t exist. Contact your local folks and follow your states rules.

I’m from Wyoming so a little different in Florida. I teach CC for Legal Heat at Sportsmen Warehouse. 1) get a classroom class. The feedback from the other students during the class will be very helpful. They are going to ask questions, that will encourage you to ask questions. Information is the key. 2) live range training time. Find an instructor and buy some real training. NRA’s website has a list. 3) with a permit, you use a gun in self defense, you will be in a courtroom. The jury is going to give you more leeway if you have a permit versus a constitutional right. I know that is wrong but that is how it is. 4) get some carry insurance before you carry out of the house the first time. I use USLaw Shield. Uscca is another. The internet has 8-10 companies that it will bring up. Do comparison shopping. 5) holsters. If you have somebody’s that all ready carry ask and talk about what works for them and what doesn’t. When you decide to buy be smart about it. Cheap isn’t always the way to go. Expect to buy a few different holsters until you get exactly what you want/need. And then practice, practice, practice with them until you are comfortable. 6) always carry.

I had to prove firearm training for a Florida permit, my DD214 was sufficient for that.
