Costco has "Winchester" gun safes made by Granite out of Ft. Worth. What do you think of them for $499.00?? Thanks!

What are the dimensions of the safe? also what is the fire rating and what type of lock does it have.

They're probably the same ones Walmart has for $549, about 54x20x26 with fire rating and electronic lock.
Both my safes are from Sams, manufactured by Granite.
They both work well, combination locks are reliable, and doors open and close easy.
Mine may be a little bigger than the one you're looking at. Prices at Sam's run about $700.
If I needed another safe, I'd buy another Granite.

I'm not a CostCo member, don't have one here in our neck of the woods but my brother in law is and on a recent trip I went to CostCo with him and noticed they carried a safe with Winchester on the front.
Hard to evaluate because the safe was locked shut and nobody knew how to open it so I couldn't look at anything except the pretty paint work. Don't know how much volume is inside, what the fire rating is, what the rating is on the lock mechanism, etc.
For that kind of money, I want to know a bit more about it. Doubtful you will get much knowledgeable help from the sales staff at CostCo so do your due diligence and Homework, the price doesn't seem bad but if it doesn't have the fire rating then you might be just better off with a steel cabinet. The reason to have a safe over a steel cabinet bolted to the concrete is the fire rating.
Remember also you are going to have to deliver it to yourself, make sure you can handle the weight and getting it located in the house.

They are good safes but I don't care for digital safe locks. Yes they are easier to open but not near as reliable compared to the good ole manual dial combination.

go to utube and watch how easy it is to pry open the cheaper gun safes,,takes about a minute with 2 guys and a crowbar. i was amazed when i first saw it.

Its not a condemnation of Costco safes, Sam's safes, or Granite. All the lower priced safes are equally easy to open. The only thing you get when you buy them at a discounter is a lower price. Notice in all the videos, the bad guys tip the safe over and begin their evil work. A safe bolted in place, preferably in a corner with a low ceiling will be much more difficult to open. Not impossible, but harder. Granite used to advertise the best fitting doors in the industry. It means a smaller crack in between the door and the jam, and therefore harder to get the oversized pry bar into it. The thick door jam and door, along with the greater number of lugs also makes it harder.
Gun safes are just sheet metal cabinets that look intimidating. The safe is just one part of your security system. Its only marginally more important than the home alarm system.

FWIW Anyone that live's in the Fort Worth area Granite Safe has a "scratch and dent sale" in December. You can go to their fabrication plant and pick one out. They usually have dozen's available. I bought one 2 years ago and my "scratch" was on the top and had to be pointed out. I saved close to $200. I'd buy another.

"Bit the Bullet" and bought...
...the Granite/Winchester safe. 450 lbs, two man delivery, 30 minute fire, electronic lock, 24 long guns, several shelves, nice paint. Measures 28 X 21 X 60". My Spouseperson said that this one is better than none and the price was right. Makes my insurance company happier too. Thanks to all who responded!
