What to do around northeast Ar. or southeast Mo. ?
I'll be spending a week in Cherokee Village,Arkansas.
Anyone have any ideas for things to do within about an hour or so drive?
Looks like Pocahontas,Jonesboro and Mtn. Home Arkansas are all within an hour away.
How about southeast Missouri? Looks like Mark Twain National Forest is pretty close.
Thanks for any tips.

Just N/E of Cherokee Village is Hardy, AR. I use to have a cabin North of Hardy, AR on the Spring River. Good canoing, trout and small mouth bass fishing. If you're going on Memorial Day weekend don't even try to get on the river, WAY too may drunks that have never been in a canoe before. Half of them can't even keep a float tube upright.

Take the drive over to Mt Home it is in between two beautiful lakes, Norfork and Bull Shoals, also a world class Trout fishery, the White River.
Across the line up in Missouri there are a lot of Old Water Mills and large springs to see.

Thanks for the suggestions, the fishing poles and tackle box is going with us.Can't complain with some trout and small mouth.
The water mills and springs should be some nice sights to see,we have nothing like that here in northwest Indiana.

I second the motion on Hardy. beautiful little town, several antique shops and a nice park on the south side of the river. take the only bridge from the downtown area across the river, turn left and the park is a quarter mile or so on your left. trout, smallies, white bass and many others. one of my favorite spots in AR. you must also post photos of the fish(no fish stories). lee

There's a little lake at Cherokee Village and the bluegill should be bedding about this time. Great eating!

I'm in MO about an hour from Jonesboro so that's where I go if I want to get out of my town of 1,000 people. They have a fairly nice outdoor store Too bad it's not winter, there is alot of good duck hunting in the bootheel of MO and NE AR

I'll second Mountain Home AR! Very nice town, and some of the best fishing anywhere (and I grew up in Minnesota, Land of 10,000 lakes) Norfork lake has awesome pan fish, Walleye (MN State fish), and huge Striper Bass. Norfork and White rivers both have world class trout fishing, people come from all over the world to experience them. The hill country is absolutely gorgeous compared to the eastern flatlands. Lots of deer and turkeys in the fields feeding in the mornings and evenings. I was just down there in February and enjoyed the warmer weather compared to back here in Alaska.

If you make it to Mt Home, keep going west towards Eureka Springs and stop here. No need for a cooler because it's smoked. Grab a sandwich, a dill pickle, and a few lbs (or 10) of the bacon. Be sure to get a menu so you can mail order some after your addiction happens.
Thank me later
Coursey's Smoked Meats - Saint Joe, AR
Eureka Springs has a bit of a tourist trap downtown but the old hotel is neat to tour. We've fished up and down the White and striper fishing is great off Bull Shoals. Some nice places to stay up there as well. Our favorite is Stetsons.
If you make it through Mt. View there is an old fashioned pharmacy with a full soda bar that's worth a stop as well.

Eaglestroker is not lying about Coursey's Smoked Meats - Saint Joe, AR . Once you try it, your hooked. It's worse than trying to kick a CRACK habit. I STILL get the SHAKES and JITTERS just thinking of it. And I haven't had any of their bacon in a couple of years.

We had a heck of a time finding it again when they moved the highway a few years ago. It is a bit of a ritual that we will fish until around 11 on Sunday and road trip to Coursey's for lunch and some of that perfectly smoked and thick cut bacon. Mail order is easier but not nearly as fun

In many areas of California, taking your brother on a date seems to have more appeal.

If you get over around Berryville in NW AR I believe go by the Saunders Museum. Went there back in the early 90's and they had a great gun display. Guns supposedly used by Billy The Kid, the James boys, Bell Star and a lot of others. Had everything from an old Japanese hand cannon to the latest thing going when he passed. Even had one of the first Colts sold to the Army.
Not far from Mountain Home and also not far from MO. Branson is just a few miles up the road from there.

I would like to thank each and every one of you who took the time to reply with tips and ideas on what to do.
With only a week looks like I will be plenty busy.Lots of what was mentioned sounds interesting.
I might need to take another week off when I get home to recoup from my week of R & R.
Thanks to all.

Lots of golf in Cherokee Village and over at Horseshoe Bend if you're into that. Mountain View, an hour or two SW is a cool town, particularly if you like bluegrass or OT music. Hardy is good for a day if you're into antiquing. I actually much prefer the NW corner of the state; the Bella Vista/Bentonville area, but it's more than a day trip. The Pea Ridge National Battlefield Park is a favorite place as are the new Crystal Bridges art museum in Bentonville and A.G. Russell knives in Rogers. I personally find Eureka Springs way too touristy for my taste, but lots of folks love it.
