I just finished a piece of Apple Pie ala mode and the thought hit me, cheddar cheese! How many of you remember back in the day ordering Apple Pie ala mode with slice of cheddar cheese on top? It was quite the thing years ago. If you ordered that today, they'd look at you like you had two heads.

What made this work was the "sweet" / "salty" contrast.

It's gained popularity lately with combinations like blue cheese and figs, etc.

One of the new sensations is dark chocolate with sea salt... or my favorite... dark chocolate and bacon candy bar.

Apple pie and cheddar still works for me.

Edited to add: All that is old is new again.

My granddad always had cheddar on his apple pie. I don't like cheddar and I can tell you colby on apple pie is one of those lower levels of hell. Ivan PS my wife likes all things cheddar but has never tried it on pie. I think the french vanilla ice cream distracted her.

I have to eat my apple pie and cheese at home. Every time I have ordered it in a restaurant, I am looked at as if an alien.

Without a slice of good sharp cheddar atop it just isn't apple pie !!! Gotta be Vanilla Bean ice cream too.

What gripes me is how hard it is to find a good sharp cheddar. Most of the cheddar I find in stores is the wimp stuff. Feh.

Pie, IMHO, is always a good idea. While I prefer cherry and always have (and for my fellow degenerates, DON'T SAY IT), apple is darned fine too. Most if not all fruit pies are good, and I can eat them topped with ice cream (vanilla, of course), but Cool Whip is fine too when you have a terrible sweet tooth like mine.

Haven't seen it, but whether that's me not looking right, or the local sissified culture, is open to question.

I have never tried it but that just sounds wrong.
So I will take my pie minus the cheese, just a scoop of vanilla, Thank you!!!

My mom made the best apple pie. She always served it with a slice of cheddar cheese. I and my wife both make apple pie, using my mom's recipe. Wife made an apple pie today, and she's in the kitchen right now slicing a couple of wedges, and of course the cheddar cheese is at the ready.

Hot apple pie with a nice scoop of vanilla... oh yes. I would need to have someone else make it with the cheese on it... don't think I could bring my self to do it.

Good, sharp cheese is from raw milk

The gub'mint is keeping us all safe as with all things food.

50 years ago, truly sharp cheese was made with raw milk with a butterfat content of 3.8% or so.

Now FDA regulates whole milk to about 3.2% & mandates anything for inter-state sales has to be made from pasteurized milk. There are super cultures that will speed the aging process thus making up for the loss of natural enzymes etc. that are lost during pasteurizing.

Some come close, but if you can find "raw milk cheddar", it's the real thing - give it a try :)
