Here is one versions of an old Cherokee legend that I heard in Boy Scouts many years ago:

Once upon a time there was a young boy who wanted to climb a mountain to see the view from the top. He climbed and climbed and when he finally reached the top he heard a small voice that said, “help me, help me, I’m cold.” He looked around and final saw a snake huddled under a rock.

“What’s the matter snake?” he asked.

The snake answered, “I climbed up here to see the view but it’s so cold I can’t get back down. Please put me in your pocket and take me back down with you where it's warm.”

“But you are a snake, you will bite me” the boy answered back.

"No, no, I promise not to bite you if you’ll just help me” cried the snake.

So the boy picked up the snake and placed it in his jacket pocket and climbed back down the mountain. When he reached the bottom he took the snake out his pocket and laid it on the ground. The snake, enjoying the warm air below, wriggled around, coiled, then struck the boy on the leg.

“Hey!!” shouted the boy. “You promised not to bite me if I brought you down the mountain.”

And the snake replied, “you knew what I was when you picked me up.”

Too bad we can't re-tell the story here about the frozen bird that falls into the barnyard, then gets thawed out.... Lot of truth in that story too.

I learned it as a frog and a scorpion crossing a creek - frog carrying the scorpion on his back. Half way across the scorpion stung the frog, and the frog said, "Why? Now we'll BOTH die."

Scorpion said, "You knew my nature when you made the deal".

Similar story involves a frog crossing a river with a scorpion on it's back.
The scorpion could not change it's nature even though it knew it would drown.

Not sure the tale of the bird and the cow pattie wouldn't pass muster.

I see Alpo is on top of things. Good job!

I took my eldest son to the local snake guy's shop to get him a new pet snake when he was about 8 years old. The owner offered him an Everglades Rat Snake to hold. It was the size of a pencil, but still bit my son at least half a dozen times in the hand and arm as he held him. My son said "he's the one I want" and named him "Lucky" on the spot. I obviously asked my son why this snake and why that name. Even the snake guy looked intrigued as the blood ran off my son's fingers and wrist. He said because if I don't take him, no one will. So, he's lucky.

Some 14 years later Lucky is about 6-1/2 foot long eats like a pig and fathered many baby rat snakes. He remains my son's favorite snake (we have many). My son still takes Lucky outside in summer to climb the small dogwood in our front yard and curl up in the sun on our rock walls. He hasn't bit my son since that first day (I'm not quite as fortunate, but that's a different story).

Snakes have very small brains and are really only programed to eat, sleep, poop, breed, escape and hibernate, but this one has truly bonded with my son. He perks up when my son is around. As far as snakes go, Lucky is a pretty cool pet.

I'm not sure if this is an alternate to Faulkner's tale. I just put it out there for consumption.

The moral to the story is we never know if a person is a snake or not because some don't bite you up front. Be aware of snakes the human ones slither around with your boss. You can track them by the slime trail left on the floor. You can also have multiple snakes on the job too. They can slither in different directions.

Thank god I'm retired.

Personally, I don't believe this story. (See first post.)

I've never seen a snake that could speak Cherokee. :D Their forked tongues cause trouble with the vowels. They can only manage the sibilant consonants.

If there was "ED" the talking horse..(I know, I saw him talk lots of times on tv), then why couldn't there be a talking snake?:D
