I'm not sure where this should go, but maybe it will fit here.

I went to Academy Sports today to buy another SD9VE since they are on sale. I haven't been there in a while, maybe a year, since it's not my favorite place to shop, but they sometimes have the best prices on certain guns. Anyway, I was half-way listening to the salesperson's spiel about how to complete the 4473, since I've done it many times, but then this caught my attention: "While completing this form, do not turn on your cell phone or talk to anyone else other than store personnel until you are done. Do not sign it until we have reviewed it."

I suppose the prohibition on using a cell phone or talking to someone else is related to a straw purchase, perhaps? That's the only reason I could think of. Are they doing this in any gun shops that you frequent? They aren't in my local gun shop, where I usually buy guns.

I'll bet a nickel that they do not want to make the customers in line behind you wait while you yak about nothing with a 3rd party. Also their boss wants efficiency in their labor.

Possibly...but it seemed that the prohibition on cell phone use or talking to someone else was focused on filling out the 4473, like it had to be done by me and me alone, with no assistance. Once that was done, reviewed, and signed, that seemed to end their concern. In fact, they took the form and went to input it, and I sat down on a bench where a couple of other guys were waiting, and we struck up a conversation. No one chastised us, so it didn't seem to be an issue then.

I'm guessing that's their flavor of due diligence to prevent straw purchases.

Kind of like when at a LGS when they insisted I physically fill out the complete 4473. Of course I had recent hand surgery, and I was wrapped up like a lobster claw.

I wish that people who waste my time while they jabber on the phone had to go to the end of the line and have the phone shoved........ You get the idea. Some people are very inconsiderate in the use of phones in public!

The shop I get my firearms or receive transfers takes my CHL and while I fill out the form they go get the gun, I give them the form and pay their fee and am out of there in 15 minutes. Sounds like just an Academy policy to me. They have probably had some problem along the way, there are a lot of knuckleheads out there you know.

Its probably a little of both reasons as to why they do it. The penalties are severe for straw purchases, even the store if they were negligent. I can understand being proactive with it. Besides, are you there to buy the gun or yak on your phone? Do all your yaking BEFORE you decide on the purchase.

I stopped buying from Academy

I stopped buying from them after their recent AR-15 debacle, whereby they removed the AR-15s from the gun racks to be PC.

A political donation search reveals they support causes which don't align with mine.

Moreover, their insane policy of asking for ID when more than 10 boxes of ammo are purchased is borderline criminal. Just take the money already and stop with the lefty PC tactics.

I told the wife unit we will be trading with our LGS going forward despite their prices being higher. Better to pay a little more and be treated like a citizen.

Not a cell phone ban, but a LGS has installed two computers in the gun department just for completing the 4473 on line, it will print out a completed 4473 for signature, but the approval number is already on it from the IL State Police computer. In IL we have to obtain an approval number of the person purchasing a personal weapon, and on line it is literally instantaneous.

According to Rahm Emanuel if you can prove you're a Chicago resident you can come here to Indiana and legally get a free no paperwork gun with every case of Muscatel you buy.

In IL we have to obtain an approval number of the person purchasing a personal weapon, and on line it is literally instantaneous.

Does Illinois still require a 3 day wait to pickup gun??

I wish I had...like so many other things I wonder about in this world. ;)

If it is a store policy than it's fine by me. I don't shop there but I really dislike people yacking on the phone when they are checking out, anywhere!!

Even worse when driving. making a turn and smoking at the same time!

Too right. What scares me is these idiots texting while driving something like a Suburban or Tahoe, or giant pickups with lift kits, some even with cattle guards-- all at the level of my head. I'm in a cheap Asian import built like a beer can. Do the mental physics calculations...

There is only three things I like Academy for, they be: 1) Availability of ammo. 2) Their wooden wildlife boxes I get to store my ammo in. Need another one now. :D 3) I forget what Nr 3 is? but ye get my drift.

PS, none of the WMs here ask for id to purchase whatever amount of ammo you wish? Ive seen one guy buy up to twenty boxes of whatever he wanted-and the only one batting an eyelash-is me because of spending hundreds at one time. HJowever, I care not-buy what I can afford-and merrily skip on my way.

There are shops here that have been doing it for years. For them it's all about the straw purchase but it's more for people they don't know. If you're a regular it doesn't apply.

You'd absolutely HATE--driving in my area. I see dozens of times every day--people yakking on cell phones-playing that stupid game while driving, speeding, driving VERY aggressively etc. My city is in the top 10 worst drivers poll-in the country. I THINK they are the 3rd???
