Do donkeys drink beer???
Well, yes they do. I can say this from personal experience. In the mid 1950s, Dad and I would drive up on Cave Creek Road from Phoenix to Lookout Mountain, located way north of Phoenix, where we would do some shooting. Along this curving road was a gas station owned by a fella named Charley Abels, a WWI veteran. It was a small station, but it had a star attraction. There was a donkey named Jimmy tethered there, and Jimmy's main trick was drinking beer out of a bottle which he could hold in his teeth and empty into his mouth. Charley would charge a buck or two, provide the beer, decap it, and let you give it to Jimmy. I don't know who enjoyed it more - the beer giver or the beer drinker.
Recently, I was reading a book about Mr. Abels, the title of which is The Last of the Fighting Four. It's a book about four brothers who fought the Germans with the First Infantry Division in France during the first big fracas. Charley survived the war (although two of his brothers did not), and traveled with his wife from Ohio to Arizona in a Model T Ford. The Arizona weather helped him to recover from sickness, and he started his little station and later became a Representative in the Arizona legislature.
In the book, and it jumped right out at me, was a picture of Jimmy the beer-drinking donkey, just as I remembered him. Do donkeys drink beer? You betcha! I remember giving him beer like it was yesterday!
Here's the picture in the book -
John

If I was kept tied up in the desert all the time, I'd drink too.

Actually, he was tethered close to the north side of the station's building, so he had shade (and water) when he wanted it. I think he preferred an ice-cold beer, though!

A buddy of mine had a dog that loved beer. If you set a half full beer down somewhere the dog would knock the bottle or can over and lap up the beer. One evening several of us were sitting by the lake having a few and not watching what the dog was doing. After a time that dog got enough beer that he got drunk and fell into the lake. A couple of us had to jump in to keep the dog from drowning. From then on we made sure to keep an eye on our beer. I really don't think beer is good for a dog.

When I was a kid friends of my Dad had a goat that would drink beer, rum and coke, and just about anything else they would part with. He would finally get tipsy and stagger away from the party.

I've never seen a donkey drink a beer.
But I've seen many a horse's *** drink a beer.
And other alcoholic beverages at a bar.

I had a malamute/Samoyed mix that enjoyed a nice craft beer on occasion. Sweet natured dog who preferred being out in the snow rather than in the house until she was quite old

Yes. They used to keep one in a garden area of a pub I used to visit occasionally. He was always begging for treats and beer. If you left the glass on a tray on a table, he would carefully tip over the glasses with some beer left in them and slurp the dregs off the tray. I suspect the public health yellow jacket and hard hat crew had such practices banned on public health grounds.

We had a Poodle that loved beer, you could open a can of soda and she wouldn't pay any attention to it, you open a can of beer and she would come running, how she could tell the difference is beyond me.

When I was younger there was a rich man that had a farm close too us and he had show cattle. He hired a man from Texas to look after his cows and the Texan had a horse that would drink a soft drink. The horse would turn the bottle up and never spill a drop. I can't remember if was Coke or Pepsi but it was the only one he would drink. Many times I saw people try too get him too drink something else but he wouldn't do it. Larry

U.S. census and livestock surveys have determined that our nation has more horse's posteriors than horses.

While in high school, one of my buddies, Clay, raised a pig for FFA and fed him on nothing but stale beer that he got for free from the local pub and oats. The thing got huge and repulsively obese (kinda like the picture of the guy below).
Long story short, Clay entered ol' fatso in the fair and the pig got away from him and proceeded to run around the show ring, totally out of control. The judge, in a fit of exasperation, finally kicked Clay and his hog out of the ring. Apparently nobody likes an obnoxious drunk...even if it happens to be a pig.

I can speak from experience that Labs also like their beer and will not pass up the chance to drink the leavings from the top of a keg in the back of a pickup truck. At night. with a bunch of inidviduals. Shining raccoons. I can also state from experience that mahem WILL ensue if someone throws a possum in the back of said truck. With said dog. And said individuals.

There is not better entertainment at the county fair than watching the 4H kids show pigs. When the pigs get together they are as social as Yuppies in a biker bar. They have "volunteers" with pig boards or panels that get to separate them. If they cannot see the offenders they are usually OK but not always.

My cousin used to have a dog that loved beer. I remember sitting on the back porch and playing fetch with an inebriated dog. It seemed like great fun at the time, but I was just a kid. Now, I'd feel sorry for the pooch. PETA would probably bring us up on charges.

Sorry to bust your bubble Muss, but nether my deceased mother, or my wife, would, or will consider drinking beer. Both of their replies are the same, if offered a beer. "I'd just as soon leave it in the horse!".

Boozing dogs
A favored uncle, a farmer, had dogs, that he shared his beer with. When he was having a beer, he would pour some of his beer into the palm of his hand, to share with his current dog. All of his dogs became enthusiastic boozers.

"Do donkey's drink beer?" is a line in a very old joke. It goes like this:
A man walks into a bar and asks the bartender "Do donkey's drink beer?"
The bartender replies, "I don't know, but I've seen a lot of jack*****es drink scotch..."
(Insert rimshot here...)

When I was a boy, the family dog was apparently mostly a dachshund. He was an inveterate beggar, and would sit upright begging beside the dinner table until you finally gave in and shared something with him.
My dad loved to have wine with dinner, and one evening he noticed our dog begging and looking at the wine glass.
Dad soaked a small piece of bread in the wine and gave it to him. He wolfed it down and begged for another. Dad decided to honor his requests for quite a few repeats.
Then we noticed that our doggy had gone nose down on the floor with his front legs tucked under his chest and his butt propped up on his hind legs. He then proceeded to propel himself across the floor in this unusual position until his nose hit the wall. He then dropped down, and decided to sleep there for the rest of the evening. I've never seen a drunk dog before or since, but he sure was fun to watch!

If animals had to deal with the kind of things that people have to deal with they’d all drink.

A True CWA Depression Era Story
My dad told this humorous story, about his fellow CWA workers getting a Hen Chicken drunk. It was the practice of CWA workers, in the winter, to try and find a warm spot to eat their lunch in. They’d find a cow, lying in pasture, alongside the road, and chase her out of her warm spot, and then lye down in it themselves. On one occasion, an old sitting hen was sharing a warm spot with a cow. They chased the cow out of her nest, and One of the men placed that hen on his lap, another man produced a whisky bottle from his pocket, pried the hen’s beak apart, and gave her sips of whisky. The hen soon became happily inebriated, and put on an exuberant show of drunkenness. That show gave the men many great laughs, and took their mind away from their sad state.
