My Wife and I take our after dinner ice cream seriously! We have a little every night after we eat dinner - assuming we do eat at home. When we lived up North, Turkey Hill ice cream was our brand of choice and when we moved down South we came to realize that it is not available here. My Wife made a dozen or so phone call to Turkey Hill (PA based) to no avail. She was driving me crazy over ice cream! :o OK - I admit it was a great brand and after she got it through her head there was not going to be any Turkey Hill on our table here, we sought out other brands.

Well, it took about a month and we tried just about all the major braids available. FINALLY, we tried Publix Premium (black container) ice cream and it was absolutely incredible!! After going through at least 10 different flavors we have focused on Coffee, Chocolate Almond, Vanilla (classic), and Maple Walnut. Well, not to drag on and on, but let me just say this........ I NEVER hear the words "Turkey Hill" any longer!! HA! Try it - you'll LOVE it!!

PS: We are not over weight and do not have diabetes, so one scoop, 5 nights a week seems to not cause us any harm. :)

I been telling people that for years - Publix store brand ice cream is the best ice cream I have ever tasted. It appears to be made from nothing but cream and sugar and flavoring. No artificial ingredients.

And if you have not tried the churn style butter pecan, you really need to. I have a list, on my phone, of all the Publix ice cream flavors, rated from 1 to 10. Churn style butter pecan is a 12.

Sorry to be an "elitist" Texian but my deepeest sympathies for those outside the distribution zone for Blue Bell ice cream!

Actually I lived in Florida back in the 80s and loved Publix and their ice cream.

I would like to try that with scotch instead but, I guess ice cream would do.

Thanks for the lead, We'll give it a try.

I never bought any kind of ice cream anymore, under any circumstances, after I started making it myself. I won't even eat anything else. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. There's simply nothing that can hold a candle to homemade ice cream. I've never discussed the matter with anyone in these parts who doesn't feel the same way. I'm sure there are some, or the stores wouldn't carry ice cream. And there are a few recipes for making it that don't cut it. But those are anomalies. People in these parts who want something good go to ice cream socials where it's made and/or make it themselves.

Regards,
Andy

I don't doubt that Home Made can be custom tweaked to an individuals liking and blows away store bought. I am a very hands on person who does all his own electrical, plumbing, carpentry, automotive, electronic, G-smithing, etc. but making ice cream is just not something I'm into. In fact about the only thing I can make in the kitchen is a killer cheese cake, great omelets and killer nachos. I am also a pretty fair BBQ-ist but other than that, I am not much good in a kitchen. My wife would never have the patience either. That said, I've tasted some friend's home made ice cream a few years back and it was pretty good.

Best ice cream I ever had was at a company picnic for the Bonneville Power Administration. Fresh made huckleberry ice cream made with fresh, ripe huckleberries. Absolute bliss.

The only problem is I don't think it's around here.

No matter .... There's an underlying trend behind this example.
In the general sense, we'd all do well to explore our local store brands.
They can be a little hit or miss, but they hit more often than you'd expect.
