I believe bobbing a J-frame hammer is one of the best modifications you can do. I don't usually remove the single action notch, as it doesn't affect anything, but it's easy to do. Here is an old thread with good pictures. File off the indicated notch and that's all it takes takes to make it DAO.

Sounds like either S&W messed up (would be a rare gun) or a .44 barrel and cylinder were put on as an afterthought (which would be unique in its own way, but not necessarily valuable).
