Recent events have forced me to change direction on my EDC

This past weekend saw some close friends and some of my favorite locales become the target of some gang activity.
In talking with several law enforcement officers at a security review for our campus they have seen a dramatic rise in carjackings, vehicle theft and even two abductions at places that never make the news when it comes to crime reports. Several neighborhoods including one that consistently ranked year after year as one of the nations safest places are no longer safe havens.

The two abductions were separate incidents both being woman shopping in a relatively safe (until now) area and both ended up being found miles away sadly murdered. Multiple assailants are suspected based upon initial evidence.
One at a shopping plaza and another at a mall.

My coworker had his Nissan Pathfinder stolen out of his elderly mother’s driveway in one of those nationally ranked safe neighborhoods. Several friends have had their vehicles broken into as well as the catalytic converter being stolen. It’s to the point law enforcement is recommending not to shop alone when visiting high traffic retail areas. Something about easy access to highways makes it more attractive to the criminal element.

For the past 30+ years I carried a revolver mostly j frames. I’m a decent shot with them and can always hit a paper plate at 10 yards. Depending on ammo or my ability that day I can shoot a palm sized grouping and sometimes have 3 or so rounds touching.

My buddy showed me his Ring Camera footage and there were 4 maybe 5 who approached his Nissan. Hard to tell as the vehicle was slightly obscured by the porch railings but you could make out several hooded figures Suddenly a 5 shot snub does not seem to be enough.

I had a Shield 1.0 at one point many many years ago and couldn’t hit the side of the barn if I was standing inside the barn! I am now looking at a 365 or CC9 or Hellcat. At my age I may also look into an optic but not sure. The newest crop of mini 9mms have double stack magazines and larger grips some with inserts that can help with me handling and controlling them. Some friends are gonna let me shoot a few to see what I like. I may look on the used
market for some older DAO semi autos since that should approximate a revolver trigger that I am accustomed to.

Scary times we live in and after the ah ha moment this morning hearing the latest news that snub just doesn’t enough now.

Sobering to say the least.

Sobering to say the least.

It is very unsettling, sad, and incomprehensible, that we are witnessing the level of diabolical evil in the year 2025.

Fortunately, where we live there is a Border Patrol Office.

I have two neighbors who are Border Patrol Agents.

In the past 19 years here, we’ve had 4 incidents of crime, and the local police, sheriff, and Border Patrol have canvased and searched our neighborhood for criminals. Three (3) have been in the dark of early morning with helicopters spot lights and LE going door to door.

The first time was in 2007, I came home after work to find we had 2 car-jackers who held up the driver at gunpoint. One was apprehended in the truck they jacked, the other one ran. That perp ended up in my backyard with 10 LEOs all over him.

“In officer-involved shootings, police officers often miss their targets, with studies showing hit rates rarely exceeding 50% and sometimes as low as 23%.”

Can you imagine the average citizen’s hit rates?

Currently my two choices with a defense carry is a P365 Micro with a MagGuts +2 kit in my 12-round mag, and my BG2 with 11 rounds in my 12-round mag.

I say there’s no such thing as too much fun, too much money, or too much ammo. :D

Bad guys/gals are just like cockroaches. Turn on the lights and they scurry off.

Gary Robert did an article on how the G19 is the new J frame and IIRC it was based on an incident in which multiple miscreants accosted him while he was walking the dog.

The Gary Roberts?

There's a forum called pistolform.com that's supposedly a bunch of cops and trainers and all the gurus of the gun industry.

Every year somebody does a survey of who's carrying what and every year the results of that survey are overwhelmingly 85% people carrying the Glock 19. And I think it was like 8% of the remainder was a Glock of some other kind and some other caliber and everything else was all other guns

I have had them all at one point or another...Shield, Shield Plus, Shield Plus carry comp, Hellcat Pro, a few Glocks and a few Ruger's....

Consider this.....12/15/17 round capacity, one of
the best triggers S&W makes...1911 style handgun...feels good, shoots great...easy to carry and conceal....

It's worth a look see.....My Shield Plus which I dearly loved has been assigned to guarding the safe as the E-Series has totally altered my thinking of what a perfect cc weapon should be.

The original CSX (now discontinued ) had a short Barrel and a not so great trigger, but whoever is running things at S&W must have kicked some backsides because this new one is fantastic.

The Sig P365 is my EDC and I qualify with it for my part-time LE position (The agency actually issues the P365 as their duty weapon). I "upgraded" mine to the "X" size frame (Wilson Combat grip module). In this configuration it will take 12, 15 or 17 round magazines. The 12 round is flush with the grip. Hopefully I won't get into a situation where I will need more than 17 rounds, but it is easy to carry a backup magazine. The only LE shooting situation where I fired a gun I found 3, 357 rounds sufficient to neutralize the threat.

Sadly, many of our elected representatives see violent criminals as an endangered species and do everything they can to protect them. While I like my revolvers, I don't see them as being adequate for today's threats.

Personally, I now carry (when I am where my non-resident permit is honored) a Sig P365 Micro. My mindset is that the vermin will most likely travel in a pack, and the 10 round magazines that I can legally possess (especially if they are wearing body armor), won't be enough. After training in the Sig Academy shoot house, I feel 2-3 rounds per varmint would be the proper prescription. (2 to the chest, 1 to the head.) I don't fantasize worst case scenarios, but being disabled and unable to run, I'm forced to plan ahead for a fight that I must win.

If it's not my P365, I'll be carrying the Glock 26 (less expensive to replace)!

Until they don’t. And then, you better have something other than a handgun. The ones that don’t run are most likely trained and skilled. While you are targeting them, they will be returning your fire. Just because you have a 5, 6, 10, 15, etc shot handgun does not mean you can prevail against that many of the foe. If they decide to stick around and return your favor, you will likely end up bleeding. It sucks, but the handgun, even the high capacity ones, does not guarantee victory for the good guy.

How many cases do we have of "multiple" perps actually pressing home their attack once they find out their supposedly "easy" victim is armed and shooting back? From what I have seen, 99+% of the time, they scatter like the roaches and cowards they are.

Everyone should carry what they feel comfortable with, but I think the multiple attacker justification for John Q. Public needing to EDC a higher capacity platform is a bit overblown. Of course, if you actually have real factors that increase your risk, like working an overnight c-store, or reasons why you would be specifically targeted, then you do what you need to do.

I know this opinion is not very popular on defensive focused forums, and it's definitely not intended to indicate tacit support of legal restrictions on what citizens can carry. I write this while eating dinner at a "hole-in-the-wall" Mexican fast-food joint on Wadsworth in Wheatridge, CO, not the best of areas, armed with a P220C with 6+1 rounds of 230 gr FMJ, an additional 6 in a spare mag, and my "always there" .22 LR NAA Mini BUG.

If I start seeing repeated documented instances contrary to my current paradigm of carrying something in the 5-9 round capacity range (plus reload), I will change my EDC protocols. Otherwise, probably not.

If you have not already done so, taking a course that teaches personal safety and security up to and including the use of deadly force would be advisable. It's great to have the best handgun available, but better still if you can reasonably avoid having to use it, and the downstream legal ramifications.
