Recent events have forced me to change direction on my EDC

After overthinking the 365 for a while, bought a 365x.
Short barrel, longer 12 round flush mag grip.
After being happy as a Pig in the Poopy,
Bought a 365 X Macro. 17 round flush magazine.
All the 365 Mags are backward compatible.
Here’s my 365x with a 17 round mag onboard.

The days of wheel guns have been over for awhile. Multiple assailants are the norm. I’ve been carrying a Glock 19 for years. I love revolvers, but they don’t have enough ammo on board.

OP wrote: At my age I may also look into an optic but not sure

To each his own but everyone I know carrying an everyday handgun eschews optics. Obviously, I don't know every shooter in my city, never mind the rest of mankind, but these folks are very competent gun/self-defense folks and are not inclined to play around with looking for a red dot when they need to be pointing and shooting. Red dots are cool, I actually have them on two ARs because I believe they work well on rifles, but handguns are designed for pointing and shooting except in competitive gun games like IDPA, IPSC, etc. YMMV

I'll stick with my J frame for now as a routine thing but I do switch to a higher capacity 9mm if I'm going to where goblins might find many targets of opportunity.

Western Washington is a cesspool where kids as young as 12 are committing major crimes. And they run in packs like hyenas looking for an easy target.

I retired my revolver for now and I’m done with mini 9’s. A Glock 48 on my hip with a 15 round mag and two 10 round mags in my pockets. All stoked with Federal HST.

Sometimes my Glock 19 goes for a ride. But it’s heavier so it stays on my nightstand most often.

This past weekend saw some close friends and some of my favorite locales become the target of some gang activity.
In talking with several law enforcement officers at a security review for our campus they have seen a dramatic rise in carjackings, vehicle theft and even two abductions at places that never make the news when it comes to crime reports. Several neighborhoods including one that consistently ranked year after year as one of the nations safest places are no longer safe havens.

The two abductions were separate incidents both being woman shopping in a relatively safe (until now) area and both ended up being found miles away sadly murdered. Multiple assailants are suspected based upon initial evidence.
One at a shopping plaza and another at a mall.

My coworker had his Nissan Pathfinder stolen out of his elderly mother’s driveway in one of those nationally ranked safe neighborhoods. Several friends have had their vehicles broken into as well as the catalytic converter being stolen. It’s to the point law enforcement is recommending not to shop alone when visiting high traffic retail areas. Something about easy access to highways makes it more attractive to the criminal element.

For the past 30+ years I carried a revolver mostly j frames. I’m a decent shot with them and can always hit a paper plate at 10 yards. Depending on ammo or my ability that day I can shoot a palm sized grouping and sometimes have 3 or so rounds touching.

My buddy showed me his Ring Camera footage and there were 4 maybe 5 who approached his Nissan. Hard to tell as the vehicle was slightly obscured by the porch railings but you could make out several hooded figures Suddenly a 5 shot snub does not seem to be enough.

I had a Shield 1.0 at one point many many years ago and couldn’t hit the side of the barn if I was standing inside the barn! I am now looking at a 365 or CC9 or Hellcat. At my age I may also look into an optic but not sure. The newest crop of mini 9mms have double stack magazines and larger grips some with inserts that can help with me handling and controlling them. Some friends are gonna let me shoot a few to see what I like. I may look on the used
market for some older DAO semi autos since that should approximate a revolver trigger that I am accustomed to.

Scary times we live in and after the ah ha moment this morning hearing the latest news that snub just doesn’t enough now.

Sobering to say the least.

Out of a group of 4 or 5 thugs, how many do you think you are going to have to shoot? Highly likely that if you shoot one or two, (or even shoot and miss ) the others will skedaddle.
What town do you live in/by ?
😆

The only encounter I have had with someone I thought was a danger to me was when I was returning home after attending a meeting in Chicago. I had to stop in the Joliet area for gas and he approached me while I had the nozzle down the fill pipe. It was night time, and even though the station was well lit I didn't feel safe with him coming closer than 7 yards.

Before I left the Chicago area I put my S&W model 59 in a thumb break belt-slide holster then covered both with a loose fitting jacket. The wind was blowing enough to allow the jacket to flap open now and then which was enough for him to see I was armed. I was not brandishing the weapon, only not controlling the jacket such to prevent someone seeing my pistol in it's holster. He didn't come closer than 7 yards and if he had I would have put my hand on the grip and freed the snap. For those who don't know Joliet, IL is a location of one of the state prisons and sometimes, when released, the prisoners take up residence in the town.

I am not okay with becoming a statistic for the crime reports.

I'm not sure which is cheaper, a 9MM bullet or a quick squirt from a fuel nozzle. I can assure you from personal experience, raw gasoline burns for many hours.

I have 4 years and over a thousand rds through my CZ P07. No rust despite getting wet often, holds 15 rds ( holds more but 15 is an even number in my head), dead nuts reliable with at least a dozen ammo brands through it. I like the smaller guns but I can't hit with 'em. "A man needs to know his limitations." Only downside is it would be way more comfortable if I was carrying 15 less pounds. Joe

Sounds like you need to move the heck out of there.
As for high-capacity guns, the more shots you fire, the more likely you will hit an innocent bystander, and lose everything you have in the civil suit(s) surely to follow.

Until they don’t. And then, you better have something other than a handgun. The ones that don’t run are most likely trained and skilled. While you are targeting them, they will be returning your fire. Just because you have a 5, 6, 10, 15, etc shot handgun does not mean you can prevail against that many of the foe. If they decide to stick around and return your favor, you will likely end up bleeding. It sucks, but the handgun, even the high capacity ones, does not guarantee victory for the good guy.

And now they are socialized to say, "You really think you're gonna shoot me, bro?" They also play bad(posterior) to their associates' phone cameras...

How many perps do you think you are going to have to shoot?
Almost unheard of for a good guy to have to shoot more than two. Even that is relatively rare.
Carry the gun you are most familiar with, and carry it ALL THE TIME.

Excellent situational awareness. That’s half the battle right there. I’m still amazed at how many idiots walk around staring at their smartphones...

Well, I'm in agreement with the OP. Over my 32 year LEO career, I can't even remember all the latest and greatest off duty / back up guns I've carried (most of which I still have). God only knows how many holsters i have!
So now I've been retired for 20 years and just had my 76th birthday. My EDC is also a Sig P365. 12 rounds of 124 gr +P HST and a 15 round spare. I still qualify my annual LEOSA. My eyesight isn't what it was 40 years ago, so iron sights are getting more challenging.
Now, I have a Shield SMSc red dot and it makes a world of difference for me. I also installed an XS Big Dot front sight. It draws my eyes immediately to the center of the red dot window. The dot is always on and adjusts for lighting conditions, it also co-witnesses with the XS Big Dot front sight. Never had the dot fail. Supposedly, the battery is good for two years. I change it every News Years Day. For those who whine about the battery going dead and leaving you "sightless". Doesn't matter, the SMSc allows the iron sights to be fully visible through the sight window. I also carry in a Vedder Light Tuck AIWB holster and I'm not afraid. I have carried AIWB for most of my adult life.
Anyway, I have carried a a handgun every day for 50+ years, and that's my opinion, yours might differ.

The price ain't too pretty....

I have had them all at one point or another...Shield, Shield Plus, Shield Plus carry comp, Hellcat Pro, a few Glocks and a few Ruger's....

Consider this.....12/15/17 round capacity, one of
the best triggers S&W makes...1911 style handgun...feels good, shoots great...easy to carry and conceal....

It's worth a look see.....My Shield Plus which I dearly loved has been assigned to guarding the safe as the E-Series has totally altered my thinking of what a perfect cc weapon should be.

The original CSX (now discontinued ) had a short Barrel and a not so great trigger, but whoever is running things at S&W must have kicked some backsides because this new one is fantastic.

...but from what I've read so far it's worth it. In my present state of impecuniosity, though, I'd look at Sig and H&K. Actually, What I'm really going to do is stick with my Shield.:)

My EDC over the last 6 years has been a P365. Half the time it gets carried in my Kramer Horsehide leather holster and the half it's in my DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. With the 10+1 onboard and a backup magazine, I have 21 rounds available and feel comfortable with that. When it is in my night table at night I have 3 other backup magazines loaded and one of them holds 17 rounds. That's plenty of fire power! The standard night sights not only glow in the dark, they are also excellent during the daylight hours. The little pistol is also superbly accurate! I use Federal 9mm, 124 grain HST which IMHO is the top dog in a Micro 9mm handgun.

I've now got well over 8,000 rounds through it without a hiccup! I did replace the springs and striker along the way as Sig suggests but only did that as precautionary procedure. I also added a manual safety a few years back and it is very easy and convenient to operate. The parts are drop-in and a simple notch cut out in the frame allowed the manual safety to fit right in.

I do not care for optical sights, especially on carry guns, but that is just my own choice and opinion. The Hellcat is also a very good gun and does hold 1 more round onboard with the standard flush fit magazine, however like someone above mentioned it is a 1/2" bigger. Nothing terrible but noticeable when carried in a front pocket.

My EDC prior to the P365 was a M60-7 Chief's Special but 5 rounds of .38 Spl. in a heavier, wider, bulkier and larger revolver no longer gave me a feeling of adequately protection. Reloading a revolver needs to happen more frequently and is a longer and more difficult procedure, especially under stress.

Grimjaws My wife disliked the small basic P365 but liked the p365xl far more . She carried a kimber ultra 9mm for some years and really liked it and shot it well but as we aged the weight of even the alloy framed model started to bothered her . She ended up with the P365xl when the wilson grip module was avaliable for a larger circumference grip .

I've carried 4" or 4.25" full size pistols for 38 years in 40sw and 45 but started looking at future CC handguns and picked up a m&p 4" compact 2 years ago and added a holosun green circle dot optic to it . This last year a Hellcat pro comp was purchased and added to my one other 9mm pistol . . That one comes with a 15 and 17 round mag's for a 20 oz empty pistol and do to the compensator its very easy to shoot to to minimal muzzle rise thanks to the compensator used . Trigger is a little heavier but still far lighter pull weight with a shorter pull length than any snubby your use to allows this old man to groups rounds well . I may need a dot optic on a carry handgun sooner than later so I train for that need but even with trifocal glasses I warn for 15 years I still shoot with stock handgun sights for defensive needs .

We do not care to pocket carry so not interest in a smaller micro handguns . Also never had any issue concealing a lw commander in 45 since '86 or m&p 4.25 full size 40sw since around 2006.

Your just going to have to try a few different handguns or at least handle any number of models to decide what might works best for you .
