Sub $50 primers...

My feelings exactly.....

Norma USA sent out an email flyer for the Argentina Servicios y Aventuras primers at $49.99/m.

At the least, it's the competition gaining market share over the domestic producers. Someday they'll want us back.

I was wondering what it would take to become an importer. I think anything that you had in stock for less than $80/1000 would go like hotcakes.

I took inventory and found that I'm pretty good on small pistol. Ok on small rifle (but I would feel better with more) and not so good on large rifle. (These are the three I use) I priced large rifle and THEY WANT LIKE 130 BUCKS FOR A THOUSAND.
AND they are OUT OF STOCK everywhere.

And I had thought that $90/1000 was outrageous.

Large Rifle primers seem to be the problem at the moment. The "shortage du jour". I don't use them but I see a lot of posts about that.

I thought SP should come back down once the price on 9mm ammo came back down. They are starting too. Foreign competition is growing. Argentina is having some currency/financial issues leaving them very competitive in the export market.

I had some issues with the Argentine primers at first. I got constant misfires in my favorite revolver. Turns out the mainspring strain screw was backed out. Now they seem to work fine.

This past weekend I picked up another batch of Fiocchi SRP for $8.95.
They were right along side the CCI SRP at $8.99.
The only difference is that the Fiocchi are packed in 150ct sleeves.
I have run these before with no problems, so figured I would get more. They have been limiting them to only 2 sleeves per store visit. They had so many on the shelf I asked if I could buy a couple of full bricks. Yep, no problem.
Import vs Domestic---at 1/3 higher price, CCI/Vista can suck it!
We all know it is just corporate greed that is driving their prices and controlled supply/shortages.

I'm not relying on foreign companies but the furriners can sell primers cheaper than US made. What with shipping duty and other charges with free shipping and hazmat...and still make a profit...It kinda means to me the domestic companies are not serious about selling to US reloaders...and with the prices of domestic it seems the sellers are gouging us. I just bought the Fiocchi small pistols delivered at 58.33 a thousand. I've probably used 1/2 a million Fiocchi's over the years...mostly shotshell but they make a good product. This is at least 3 years into this shortage. There is a problem in the American supply chain and it doesn't seem as though there is any desire by the companies we have always relied on to fix it...At this point what do we have left? The cheapest American made primers I have bought(in the last year) were Winchester #41 Small rifle primers. They were 57 dollars and change delivered. I ordered 20 thousand and got 14,000. They are back up to 80 now. So some sellers are gouging or it almost looks like price fixing.

I want to add..we at one time had 4 domestic primer makers...Now 3 of them are under one conglomerate...any other product than shooting items and the gummit would probably be suing them with anti trust suits

Well, yesterday I ordered three bricks ($149.99), added a single box of .22s to push it over $150.
Free shipping and there was no Hazmat fee attached.
I didn’t ask why not.
I’ve been through a 1,000 SA from my last purchase and they have been fine in .38, .357, and 9mm.
I bought a bunch of small primer .45ACP brass…I’ll try those next with the SA.

Does Norma ship primers with signature required? Their terms of service state all ammo is shipped signature required but I don't know if they include primers with that.

I've already got a bucketload of everything but LRPs
Best price I've seen for anyone that has them in stock is $95 a brick for Ginex.
Never used them so I don't know whether they are any good or not, but the price still seems outrageous to me.

What is a Hazmat fee, anyways? It seems like it’s a made up fee just to discourage the sake and transportation of components.

Is this sub $50 fee the start of even lower primer costs? Or an anomaly?

Last time I bought primers it was $29.99 per thousand.

I've never had to sign. Might be a driver thing.

I’ll have to check the boxes I bought, I don’t see any mention that they are or aren’t corrosive.
The last I bought were $59/K.
A decent drop in price.
BTW, no signature for mine.

If these were magnum small primer, I’d order some. I really don’t use much non magnums.

Supposedly, it's to help cover the costs of the extra training, packaging, and regulatory requirements for shipping hazardous materials.

That said, any company that ships a lot of stuff gets huge discounts from the shipping companies on everything. Shipping and hazmat charges are a profit center to some extent. We used to try and make enough to pay for all the personnel and supplies used by the shipping department.

So while we may pay a $35 hazmat fee, for all we know that costs the selling company $10. That $10 is easy to give up on larger orders.

I've been watching primer prices closely. They are coming down slowly. There's still some holdouts charging $90-$95 but it's not hard to find them cheaper.

I recently bought some WSP for $69.99 which was $85.00 with all the fees and tax. I wasn't out but I was getting low enough on SP to start worrying about it and decided to hedge a shortage. I'm waiting for lower prices before I buy any more domestic primers. But I'll shoot those SA ones any day.

Ignoring the supply chain issues I figure primers should be in the low to mid $40's if you account for inflation since 2019. I was using a 2019 price of $35. So $50's isn't too far off and if you see any primers selling for a price that starts with a $4- you might not see lower.

It's a federal law that applies to certain items that are deemed to be dangerous to ship. Powder and primers are on the list, loaded ammo is not. I think online retailers sell with "no hazmat fee" when their cost of obtaining powder and primers has dropped, but instead of listing a lower price, they just pay the hazmat fee for you.

I'm still saying the price of primers is going to settle at 50- to 65 dollars. There is no incentive for domestic makers to sell cheaper. I checked Cabela's and Midway yesterday and they are higher by a fair bit...BTW I needed a signature for the Fiocchi's I just got from American Reloading...58.33 delivered per 1000. I also bought some of the SA primers for just under 50 dollars per 1000 delivered. They seem to work fine
