Sub $50 primers...

One of my jobs in the Air Force was in Traffic Management and we did shipping, receiving and cargo prep for transportation on Mil and commercial carriers. I had to go through a 2 week hazmat certification training course every 2 years in order to be able to certify hazmat for shipping. It is very expensive training. There are extra handling requirements in the transportation chain for hazmat, especially during air shipments. Also, carriers need extra insurance and licensing in order to handle hazmat. I can see an extra charge per package, but anything over $10 per package seems excessive.

I just received some Fiocchi's from American Reloading last week, signature required on the tracking. I had to wait around most of the day for the FedEx guy to show up. When he finally got there, he just said "here you go". I asked about the signature required and he said he will just type my name in since I was here and he doesn't let others touch his computer to sign. I don't know if he would have left them if I wasn't here. I would just like to order some more primers and have them show up on my porch whether I am there or not. I hate waiting around for those guys.

I’ll have to check the boxes I bought, I don’t see any mention that they are or aren’t corrosive.
The last I bought were $59/K.
A decent drop in price.
BTW, no signature for mine.
At present, I doubt any primer manufacturer on Earth still makes corrosive primers. Maybe those made in some mud hut in Nigeria might be corrosive.

I saw a video of some Pashtun guys reloading 7.62x39 steel case stuff for their AKs. They looked like filthy beggars, and were sitting on the dirt floor of their hut! The guy loading the powder was literally eyeballing the powder and pouring it into the cases!
Somehow, I bet they made their own Berdan primers out of scrap metal and crude homemade (corrosive) formula.

There are kits being sold today, I think their called .22 Reloader, for loading your own .22 LR cartridges, and they sell a mix-it-yourself dry chemical formula for the priming compound.
That stuff IS corrosive!

Well…

Because I’m cheap, I put 3 boxes of small pistol primers and a box of 50 rounds of .22LR ammunition to bring the total to over $150 in my cart and left it there to contemplate the absolute, but not relative gouging, as the most I ever paid per thousand was $29.99.

This morning, there was an email offering me 5% off the order if I completed it, making it $47.50 per thousand. Because the 5% off lowered the cost to under $150, it added shipping. I added another box of .22 LR ammunition to which 5% off was applied, and it reverted to free shipping. FYI.

And the other massive scam out there other than the Hazmat fee when it comes to firearms and ammunition is the FFL fee. Independent of the fact that it is technically an infringement upon the right to keep and bear arms as per the Second Amendment, I think the fee for an FFL is something like $35 annually. Some FFLs charge well more than that for one transaction! Yes, there’s the time involved doing the paperwork and making the phone call, but…. Or maybe, I suppose, we ought to be just grateful the annual fee for an FFL is still that cheap in this day and age. I think my professional licensure is $360 for two years, in comparison.

like Acorn...I'm hoping for some LPPs. Now have 2000 LPPs. I have a few LPMs maybe 800. I traded a fellow a thousand #41 SRPs for a thousand LRPs and traded them for a thousand LPPs + some cash. I was down to a 1000 LPPs. I can't believe the prices on LRPs. Thankfully I have a thousand or so

Just bought a brick of REM LPP from Sportsman Warehouse , $80 OTD , tax, tag and license. I was previously able to get them from SW for $5-$6 a tray , max of two trays. But now they apparently can get them by the brick with the associated price increase……

Tje primers I got from Norma were left on my porch the ones from American Reloading were signed for...but we were outside when FedEx got here

Norma not declaring HAZmat

The reason there is no Hazmat charge is that Norma is neither marking the package as UN044 or with a Hazmat decal. They are not declaring these to be HAZmat. I received my 4000 today which I ordered friday. They were shipped Fedex ground but without any declaration. I did NOT have to sign for them.

If that is the case then they are REALLY sticking their neck out - unless the DOT took primers off the Hazmat list.
Shipping unmarked Hazmats is a federal crime - and at the very least will get your shipping account canceled.
All it would take is an accident or even damage to the box that spilled the contents.
Somebody is being penny wise and pound foolish.

Mine came from Norma with the docs and hazmat markings...But didn't sign...they left 'em on the porch

I have a hard time believing Norma would open themselves up to such liability in today’s litigious world.
They’re not some fly by night operation.

Does Norma give you a tracking number, or does your order just arrive? How many days after placing an order does your order arrive?

I never received a tracking number.

Yes tracking was sent. I ordered on Mon or Tues and they are due tomorrow.

It's a federal law that applies to certain items that are deemed to be dangerous to ship. Powder and primers are on the list, loaded ammo is not. I think online retailers sell with "no hazmat fee" when their cost of obtaining powder and primers has dropped, but instead of listing a lower price, they just pay the hazmat fee for you.

There is no federal law charging hazmat fees. This is a fee carefully disguised by sellers to offset their expenses in training employees under the federal law regarding shipping - to ship in a proper box and under the triangle label, etc. If this was a lawful fee, then everyone would be charging the same - and is why distributors will waive their self imposed fee at times to encourage sales. This is just a well orchestrated scam to get more $ for their products.

That’s right, a SCAM…

I stand corrected, it's technically not federal law, but the Department of Transportation creates regulations that carry the weight of law. DOT hazmat regulations require specific labeling of materials they deem hazardous for transportation and there can be restrictions on the method of transportation and the route of transportation when it comes to hazardous materials. I expect there would be higher insurance costs for companies that transport such materials.
