Greene County, MO Deputy Sheriff Registered Magnum (Update: The RM has gone home)

Did the revolver stay in Missouri all these years?

I’m the third owner and I bought it out of Ozark, just south of Springfield. Deputy Spencer sold it to a local doctor he had become friends with and the doctor is now selling off his collection.

So the trip up 44 is the furthest this RM has gone since leaving the factory, I believe.

Outstanding, thank you for taking the time & trouble to post it.
Is there a maker’s mark on that fine holster ?
Regards,

Took it out today with a couple younger N Frame friends. Shoots tight with a 6 o’clock hold with my 38’s. I don’t think I did a deep clean on this yet but may need to as it may have some old gunk in the action. It was super fun to shoot though especially imagining the deputy pulling that same trigger on duty many years ago.

Nice to know things exist like that, nicer to se
e one. Goodness is there a story behind the acquisition?

What an interesting story. I’m a Retired Deputy U.S. Marshal and was stationed in Springfield for 19 years. Worked daily with Greene county deputies. What a great group. They carry on his tradition. Still live in the area about eight miles from the Young brothers massacre. You sir please take care of that piece of history

Yours is the best Registered Magnum gun and story I have read here on the forum!!! You have done a great service with all your historical documentation- it's rare to have the stories associated with the gun and its owner.

So did the gun end up being nickel or silver plated? Thanks.
It did get sent back in 1940 for the nickel plating. There is a circle p service stamp on the butt frame and cylinder indicating a re-nickel. When the barrel was replaced in 1949, they re-stamped the serial number but not the B for blue.

Medical Examiner inquiry testimony added which details the shooting referenced in the Deputy's 1973 letter.

Wow! just wow.....what a great story and even better ending. Did you by chance get the grandson registered as a member here?

Thanks for sharing, I really love stories with happy endings.
