I was wondering if there was a higher front sight available for the M69 as mine (with my eyes) shoots quite a bit high and the rear sight is as low as it can go. My 629 and 686 are fine. With the M69 I have to hold top of front sight half way down the rear sight notch.

Dawson Precision - I've used both Fiber Optic and Black pinned front sights on my M69s. Lots of options for heigth and width.

Although more expensive, you can replace the rear sight with a Bowen Rough Country

S&W Rough Country Rear Sights : + Bowen Classic Arms +, Parts Store

If you contact S&W, they will give you a new rear sight with a lower blade but not a higher front sight (you may have to send the gun to them).

I wish S&W would make all their revolvers with the DX front base with interchangeable blades (but they don't).

Several other's make pinned front sights for S&W but IIRC, you can only get .250" and .300" -- the .250" is to short for your application.

Pict doesn't show it, but the blade is serrated

I don't believe S&W makes a lower rear sight blade than what's on the snubby M69 already?

Mine measures .114", installed in the base, which is probably the .106" blade that's the lowest one I'm aware of. The .126" is the next tallest one.

The front sight on mine measures .283" (installed) making it the tallest ramp sight blade I've come across in the S&W parts catalog.

As Paul mentioned, an aftermarket front sight will likely be required to fix the POI for you.

.

The rear sight blade installed on my 2.75" by the factory was a .160" plain black blade. Front was the .278" red ramp. Like others I found mine to shoot high with my preferred "mid range" loads and the rear sight adjusted all the way down.

To correct this I bought a .146" white outline rear sight assembly from Midway (or Brownells, CRS strikes again!) which brought the POI down to where I wanted it for my loads. I note that on this sight the elevation is nearly bottomed out as well. A .126" height may have been a better choice but this will give me a lot of elevation to work with if I shift to a faster load.

S&W does make a .296" ramp front sight but only in plain black. I do wish that they had made this gun using the interchangeable front sight system as well.

I don't know if the following comments are relevant to this thread, but I'll make them anyway. I didn't see a reference to the type of ammunition that Sgt 45 is using. It's my understanding that the model 69 is a .44 magnum. However, less than full strength loads or .44 specials can also be used. I make this comment because it coincides with a question I asked on this forum, which is, why are rear sight blades for 19's and 66's so much taller than for 15's and 67's, They are basically the same revolvers but for 15's and 67's being limited to .38 Special rounds. (Although I'd wager more .38 Specials are shot out of 19's and 66's than .357 magnums, by far.)

Somewhere I found this listing of sight blades and corresponding handguns. I think, but don't know, it is from S&W:

Unfortunately, it does not include the Model 69.

My question was why do model 15's and 67's have sight blades of .106, but 19's and 66's have sight blades of .146? The answer was that the faster bullets hit lower. Slower bullets give recoil more time to elevate the barrel and therefore they strike higher.

At any rate, last I checked .108 height blades and others are available and may be the least expensive solution.

I'm shooting 180gr factory, 240gr handloads to about 75% of factory and a milder 200gr copper coated around 1200fps. I can adjust the sights on my 629 to poi with those loads but the M69 puzzles me. As I now have night sights on it, I will adjust mentally with the front sight half way down the rear sight notch.

Using the taller rear blade (unmounted on left in pic) in the above picture and the factory red ramp front (+-.280") I shot the following from an origianl 4 1/4" Model 69. REAR SIGHT BOTTOMED OUT.

Only shot two of each (rested at 25 yds) to minimize target clutter and reduce recoil induced fatigue.

REAR SIGHT BOTTOMED OUT. Center of large diamond was point of aim for all loads tested.

And the plot thickens... mine is DEF11xx.

I bought my snubby M66-8 within a month of the snubby M69 & it has the same size rear blade as the M69 (but the front sight is shorter) & it's a DEF41xx.

The short .106" & .126" blades have a shallower notch than the .146" & .160" blades, .058" -vs- .080".

The shallow notch makes front sight acquisition a little more difficult than the deeper notch. Don't know if that's why they changed it?
